College Admissions Essay: A Career In Law

The idea of being a lawyer has always been something that has interested me. Despite my major being finance my second interest has been law. My freshman year I took Business Law 1 with Cecilia Cook. I didn’t realize that an elective that my advisor at freshman orientation would suggest I take a class that I would truly benefit from. In that class I got introduced to the basics of law. I came out of that class with an A and I believe that that was not due to the fact that I had to study hard and force myself to work at it, it was because I was truly interested in the class and wanted to read and learn more about business law. I have learned that being a lawyer is not about driving fancy cars or living in a big house. It’s about working …show more content…
The thought of having to solve or defend a problem that someone is facing excites me. Everyone has seen shows where there are lawyers and they drive the fancy cars and have lots of money but that isn’t the reason I want to go into the profession. I don’t necessarily want to be in front of a jury presenting my case, the behind the scenes problem solving is what I find the coolest about the law profession. I have always had a passion for helping people and I feel that being a lawyer would be a great platform for me to carry that out on. My ideal law job would be working for the government in some form as a lawyer in an advisory role to political figures. Helping to keep them in line legally would be a pretty cool job. I have been made more aware of what law school is like, the good and the bad, which is why I believe my drive to become a lawyer is not based on the money or other material reasons, but because I want to make my community better. My experiences with the classes I have taken in college, the different perspectives from current lawyers, and my drive to help people has led me to want to take the next step in my educational career and go to law

Sitting in my bed, at 2:30 in theisre morning, constantly backspacing what I have originally written, I am stuck wondering what I should write about for my personal statement. That is the golden question of most, if not all, applicants applying to law school. What can I write about that explains what it is that made me want to pursue law school, what makes me stand out from other applicants, and most importantly, what showcases the kind of individual I am? I could talk about what an exemplary student I am, how I am graduating with honors and a double major, or even talk about the several internships I have held, and so on. However, everything that I have mentioned, one is able to see on my transcripts and resume, and, after all, I am more…

I lived through a difficult hospitalization my sophomore year. Unable to receive direct instruction from my teachers, the hardest problem I ever faced was learning how to teach myself honors courses like chemistry, French, and geometry during my six week hospital stay. Learning a new topic independently was similar to looking at a complex puzzle, seemingly consisting of pieces that rarely fit with any others. I soon realized that if I wanted to successfully teach myself, it was essential to find “love in learning.” I had to not only strive for good grades but also enjoy the learning process, and create an exciting educational experience for myself.…

I weighed the benefits of pursuing law against becoming a doctor, my second choice, and I quickly found that science and blood were two subjects that I did not enjoy enough to dedicate my life to them. Additionally, I realized that as a doctor I could not save everyone, but as a lawyer would always have the opportunity to guide someone away from a premature demise.
