College Admissions Essay: A Career As A Chemical Engineer

Improved Essays
I originally became curious about chemistry after I took a chemistry for engineers course at Blinn College. At the time I planned on becoming a physics major, and this was the only chemistry class required to be a physicist. Incidentally I actually failed the chemistry class. The following semester I took the course again. This time with a different teacher; who presented the material in a very interesting way. Their teaching style helped me to start understand the material and appreciate it. The new professor played a major role in my future decision of becoming a chemical engineer, but I still only received a C. I was particularly very interested in how atoms are the building blocks of everything in the universe including our galaxy, …show more content…
First I took a closer look at my current proposed degree physics. I knew, I wanted a degree that would enable me to create new items; that would better the life of mankind worldwide. After researching the physics degree in more depth I came to the conclusion that I might end up doing research for the better part of my career; with no immediate application. This wasn’t going to work, I desired to make physical products; that I could cherish, and watch improve humanity; in my own lifetime. I was suddenly very turned on to the idea of engineering, but I didn’t want to give up on learning the fruits of physics. I began looking at the chemistry, and chemical engineer major. Chemistry seemed to lead towards research also, so I leaned towards the chemical engineering discipline. During my research of the chemical engineering degree; to my delight; I found that the discipline is actually about fifty percent physics which I already loved, and fifty percent chemistry my new found passion. I then decided to take chemistry two even though it wasn’t a requirement for physics majors. Once completed I knew that chemistry was the path that I wanted to embark on, still addicted to the idea that it is the essence of science. It was then that I chose to be a chemical engineering major. With my mind set on the new degree; I began taking all the basic chemistry courses required of

The year was 2014. I was a senior in high school, already I had committed to go to Colorado Mesa University, I had a track scholarship and I was going to major in Geology, ultimately wanting to go into petroleum engineering. The only thing was, I didn’t want to. I did not want to go be a geologist, I wanted to travel, to see the world! As cliché as it may have been, I dropped out, I worked for a period of time and sent myself on a trip to Europe to “find myself”.…

My interest in physics was initially ignited during my sophomore year. I signed up for AP Physics 1, taught by a teacher in his first year, right out of college. His main goal was to encourage students to apply physics to the world around them and identify the relevancy of the course material. I was immediately hooked and I bought book after book about Einstein's Theory of Relativity, the Big Bang, and quantum mechanics. I was eager to learn as much as I could; in doing so, I realized that working in a laboratory setting, conducting experiments and applying equations, is something that I am truly passionate about.…

Personal Statement I consider myself to have been an active and hard working student during my previous educational stages. My interest in chemistry dates back to secondary school, I've been interested in chemistry, Mathematics and Physics, I wanted to pursue a degree that combines all or most of these, so I chose the Mathematical Sciences department and obtained my High School degree with an overall grade of 99.87 %. After that, I continued my studies in the faculty of petroleum and mining engineering at Suez University, where I had the opportunity to be exposed to the full range of chemical engineering courses like chemical engineering basics, unit operations, equipment design and other courses as listed on my transcript. Finally, I obtained my Bachelor`s degree in…

Chapter 11, “The Chemical Elements”, was of great interest to me. “Chemistry is the study is the study of the composition and structure of matter (anything that has mass) and the chemical reactions by which substances are changed into other substances (James T. Shipman 285).” In this summary paper, I will discuss some of the highlights of the chapter. The way I see it, God is the original/first chemist.…

Chemistry As Carl Sagan once said, “Chlorine is a deadly poison gas employed on European battlefields in World War I. Sodium is a corrosive metal which burns upon contact with water. Together, they make a placid and non-poisonous substance, table salt. Why each of these substances has the properties it does is a subject called chemistry.” Chemistry involves many things, from atoms to elements and their functions.…

In my years of high school, I took all honors classes and tried to challenge myself as much as possible. This summer, when I received my schedule, I saw organic chemistry was one of my classes. Many people told me that this class was impossible, so I went into school with my mind set on switching out immediately. Alternatively, I decided to try it out and, to my surprise, I actually…

I hear a buzz… It is just distant at first, but slowly it seems to be coming closer and closer. I open an eye simply to realize it is my clock alarm. My brain realizes that being 5 a.m. I must get up, but my body defies me; it does not want to move. Then, a vision crosses my mind; I see myself walking down an airplane runway; there is a plane parked in the distance, and the wind is gushing at me.…

Majoring in chemical engineering will provide me with a vast field of oysters from which I can pluck a pearl or two containing the specialties I enjoy. I want to find pearls that align with my research interests and moral beliefs. In particular, nanotechnology fascinates me, since it is revolutionizing everything from medicine to computer science. For instance, in 2013, Jack Andraka used carbon nanotubes in his inexpensive diagnostic test for pancreatic cancer, and in 2009, a team at Yale University created the world’s first solid-state quantum processor. Additionally, I visited Georgia Tech’s highly advanced clean room used to experiment with nano-sized particles during my meeting with Dr. Joseph Paul at the Institute of Electronics and Nanotechnology.…

I always viewed my academics as a step forward to my career, which is why I always strived to receive A’s and B’s. I never really viewed extracurricular activities as a step closer to achieving my main goal. I just enjoyed participating in clubs such as FFA, Octathlon, and Caribbean heritage society. I began to think how these clubs have molded me into who I am now. They changed me into an open, accepting, outgoing person, and helped me with deciding to become a teacher and soon a counselor.…
