College Admissions Essay: A Career As A Writer

I am not a journalist; I am a screenwriter, but like you, I have an affinity for writing because it is a fine art, like sculpting or painting. In college, I was a political science major, and I loved it because every course taught me something new and exciting about the structure of governments, the ideologies of foreign countries, or the norms and customs of any given culture. Whether I was documenting the plight of African American children in the South or the rise of the Islamic Republic in Iran, I enjoyed telling stories. I believe journalism requires first-rate storytelling ability, because if the truth is distorted so is the integrity of the journalist. Conveying emotions in an honest and creative manner is a special skill, and anybody who loves the craft of writing understands that cutting through the black and white, is what makes the relationship between author and reader so sacred. If there ever was a perfect storm in my life, I believe this is it. I think I have proven myself deserving of Georgetown’s consideration because I am more than just a hard-working student; I am a passionate storyteller with a deep love for politics and film, and I have always gone ‘through the looking glass’, so to speak, to reach creative heights. Most twenty two year olds don’t have aspirations of becoming journalists, screenwriters, teachers, and politicians in their lifetime. Most twenty two year olds don’t know how to work alone under pressure and deliver results. But then again, most twenty two year olds aren’t after the same prize I am. If you’re looking for an illustrious internship experience on my resume, you won’t find it. And if we arranged an interview, you wouldn’t hear the rehearsed answers you’ve heard from other prospective candidates
