After many indecisive attempts at completing courses at community college, I came to the final restitution of becoming a Software Engineer. Ever since, I transferred and started classes at the University of Texas at Dallas since the fall of 2015.

Growing up in the hardly diverse city of Richmond was not easy for a Chinese girl. Phrases like “All Asians look alike”, “All Asians can’t drive,” and “All Asians eat dogs,” became ingrained in my mind. Images of kids pulling the corner of their eyes while singing “Ling Ling” or “Ching Chong” became a video stuck on replay in my subconscious. In elementary through high school, on my dance and sports teams, and at after school daycare programs, I was the only Asian. The teasing never stopped because I was a rare sight and misunderstood.…

I have not had a life changing experience that prompted me to choose medicine, nor did I choose this career path at an early age. The truth is that I cannot imagine myself doing anything else. Often times, medicine is referred to as a ‘calling’- a word that describes exactly how I feel. At a local hospital, I was given the opportunity to spend three weeks volunteering my time in the General Practice clinic, where I got the chance to perform simple medical procedures such as urinalysis, blood pressure, blood glucose concentration and even an ECG.…

I always viewed my academics as a step forward to my career, which is why I always strived to receive A’s and B’s. I never really viewed extracurricular activities as a step closer to achieving my main goal. I just enjoyed participating in clubs such as FFA, Octathlon, and Caribbean heritage society. I began to think how these clubs have molded me into who I am now. They changed me into an open, accepting, outgoing person, and helped me with deciding to become a teacher and soon a counselor.…

Throughout my life, I have had many different ideas of what career I should aim to have when I finish my education and become an independent. In early elementary school, I remember wanting to be an artist “when I grew up,” and for all of middle school, I was almost obsessed with the idea of owning my own bakery and decorating cakes when I graduated from school. It wasn’t really until high school until I gave any serious thought to what type of career I should stride towards, or any serious thought to what meaning I wanted my life to have. In high school, I took many interesting and challenging classes, got to know a lot of very good teachers, and got involved in a multitude of diverse extracurricular activities.…
