College Admissions Essay: A Career As A Musician

When you start something new, you almost always start from the bottom. When you enter high school, you’re at the bottom of the food chain as a freshman. When you start a new job, you begin your training knowing close to nothing about your position. When you learn a new instrument, you must learn all the parts and their functions before even touching it. When I was in high school, I was one of the best musicians in my concert band. Now, as I enter my first year of college, I’m one of the worst musicians in the wind ensemble. I’ve set a goal to become twice the musician I currently am by the end of the semester. About halfway through May, all wind ensemble members received an email. The subject line contained one of a musician’s least favorite words: audition. All members were required to schedule an audition to decide your chair placement in the ensemble. I was determined to be first chair. I love to impress. Now however, I’m glad I sit last chair. This placement is what inspired my drive to become a phenomenal musician. I’m going to be music teacher one day, so this experience will only benefit me. The better of a musician I am, the better I will be able to teach my students. So once again, I devised a practice schedule I strictly follow. Every day I spend about forty-five to ninety minutes practicing scales, technique, various pieces my private teacher assigned, and/or wind ensemble music. After only a few weeks of following this schedule, I’ve noticed a huge improvement in my musicianship. Marywood’s core values are catholic identity, empowerment, service, excellence, and respect. With the personal goal I’ve set for myself, I highly incorporate excellence. My desire to excel in my classes and through my instrument is like no other.
