College Admissions Essay: A Career As A Professional Artist

Improved Essays
Ever since I picked up my first marker as a child, I would draw until my countless markers ran dry. By the time I picked up my first sketching pencil, I started to feel more serious about creating artwork. It was an April afternoon, with my cup of tea that I realized being a professional artist is my path in life. Decisions came easily to me in grade nine, before most of my peers would even have the slightest clue about their futures. During my high school years, I had my full life planned ahead of me, down to where I would live. Prior hand, I tried my hand in music, theatre, and dance arts. Yet, all those forms of art could not come close to the passion I have for visual art.

Since a very young age, art has always been one of my major interests. I found joy in getting my hands messy with the paint and then transforming a white piece of paper into a something more than that with a rainbow of colors. In school, I always made sure to take all the possible art classes that were available and would fit my schedule. I also began to get more in involved in after school clubs such as the National Art Honor Society and the SmART Club where we did several art projects every week. On my last year of high school I decided to challenge myself and I took AP Studio Art: Drawing Portfolio.…

Since I can remember, I’ve always been a considerable video game fan, and I wanted to translate that into a career that would allow me to do what I love and be creative in the process. After a while I came to terms that it was relatively unlikely that I would be a successful and well known game designer so I dropped that dream. The next job to catch my eye was working as a graphic designer which occurred during an artistic phase of my life where I would draw ritually. To no surprise, my imagination snagged the better of me as I speculated that it would be intriguing to do it for a profession. That too was short lived.…

I grew up with a paintbrush in one hand and a pencil in the other, and I own more art supplies than A.C.Moore. In high school, I have chosen studio art as my elective every year, and I have had four projects selected for Spring-Ford’s annual art show. In one of my favorite pieces, I incorporated music by drawing hands playing a piano in white charcoal on black paper. Then after attending several mission trips throughout high school, I discovered another passion of mine. I realized I like helping others.…

When people think of professional actors, they tend to think of romantic leading types. But I wouldn’t trade being a character actor for anything. I studied acting at Carnegie Mellon, and as graduation approached, I noticed that those of us who fell into the ‘character actor’ category were getting different words of wisdom than those who tended to play lead roles. For the leads, there was a lot of pressure to sign with a big agent and start working right away, because it’s all about youth and beauty. But it was almost the opposite for me.…

Growing up in an artistic household, there had never been a time that dance was not present in my life. At an early age, I was exposed to the arts and show business and nothing intrigued me more. I would spend countless hours backstage of my mother’s performances, frolicking in her makeup and playing make-believe. I fell in love with everything the theater had to offer and eventually it became my second home. As I grew older, and my motor skills emerged, nothing and no one could restrain me from dancing to the imaginary rhythms that flowed through my body.…

When you start something new, you almost always start from the bottom. When you enter high school, you’re at the bottom of the food chain as a freshman. When you start a new job, you begin your training knowing close to nothing about your position. When you learn a new instrument, you must learn all the parts and their functions before even touching it. When I was in high school, I was one of the best musicians in my concert band.…

Two summers ago, I experienced an epiphany in the Contarelli Chapel in the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome. While I am certainly not the first to have had a revelatory experience there, mine was not of the religious kind. Rather, mine was the illuminating realization that my path leads where my dual and symbiotic passions for history and art have been inexorably guiding me my entire young life. I have long been fascinated by the past and drawn to museums and other repositories of the past. The first time I breathed the chill conditioned air of the American Museum of Natural History, my father had to lift me on his shoulders to give me an unobstructed view of the fossil remains of a triceratops.…

Undoubtedly, art has always been an inspiration for me to be more creative in my everyday life; similarly, art allows me to exercise my imagination to the fullest extent. It is unfortunate that society is lacking this originality today, as creativity is directly intertwined with innovation. For me, this concept definitely applies, and thus I believe that art pushes me to seek experiences outside of my comfort zone. More specifically, I recently participated in Ottawa’s Young at Art competition, where I submitted an original piece of artwork.…

The heat from the stage lights, the watchful gazes of the audience, and the sweat dripping off of our faces as we struggle to remember our lines, these sensations of being on stage are what caused the performing arts to become not only an activity, but also a passion and an unexpected source of personal growth. Through my experiences in drama and music I have been able to discover my own meaning of fulfillment and define who the person behind my appearance truly is. My passion in the performing arts started when I was a young child first learning to play the violin. Picking up the violin at the age of 6, I became stuck on one of the most basic songs for almost a whole year. At that time no one believed that I could play the violin, my teacher thought that I was too hyperactive and even my mom attempted to convince me to quit.…

“What are you going to do differently?” This was my father figure’s question when I told him about my dream of becoming a designer. He said that everyone wants to be rich and famous and climb the ladder of success quickly, but seldom does anyone want to do the work. As I began really doing research on work in the industry, I saw that many designers either didn’t finish school or didn’t study any form of fashion. Yes, I understand not everyone needs to attend school in the industry, but these designers may not have had the opportunity to learn what was done before them.…

It took many years for myself to come to the realization that college savings accounts were commonplace. I never assumed that I would graduate high school to find that I did not have to worry about my financial situation. It was others that assumed it of me. Teachers would often reiterate that while we were searching for colleges, we had to speak to our parents about “what they could afford,” so that we could avoid future heartbreak. But that conversation never mentioned what was to be done if that number was zero, when your parents never had the opportunity to save for your education, when you did not have to ask to know.…
