I currently work as an admissions assistant in a nursing home. When I first started working in this position, my boss sent me to a training, at our corporate office, located in Tampa, FL. I remember during those days, an incident occurred in Orlando where a lot of people died inside a gay club. After that transpired, I was afraid to come back to Miami by airplane, instead I wanted to return driving. Disagreements are never pleasant. We need to resolve them quickly before they escalate or become personally critical, which is very hard to take back once harsh words are out. We also need to try and resolve them completely to avoid it happening again. Volunteering at school with young children I see quite a few disagreements.…

“10% of conflicts is due to difference in opinion, 90% is due to wrong tone of voice”. Throughout history society has witnessed conflict arise for any number of reasons; we must consider all factors of what is happening and also who is affected by the tension created by the outcome. Often the longer the engagement continues the more varied each parties’ responses will be. Failure to discuss the truth can be simply down to the fear of losing everything or the exact opposite where one’s hubris ego purely believes that he is right no matter what sort of evidence against them. However, society has also seen that the when the people’s responses become more varied this can lead to further conflict in a more physical manner.…

Would it not be great to be able to prevent conflict altogether? Not having to resolve any disputes, or differences, and having complete harmony. It would be amazing; however, conflict is part of life. We may not be able to prevent it all the time, but we can be prepared to resolve it in the best manner possible. Authors, Ken Sande and Kevin Johnson, share their knowledge in their book titled, Resolving everyday conflict, providing a Christian view on conflict resolution (Sande & Johnson, 2011).…

Some styles result in a lot of progress and building relationships and others result in very little. The most effective type of conflict resolution is compromising and the least effective is forcing. But the situation would not even be a conflict if the members of my family did not have different views. That’s fine, but what isn’t is when members of my family pre-judge us and think that when they come around us they will get the you are a horrible sinner and you will go to hell speech which is something that we would not force upon them like that. That is also one of the things we went over in class was that with conflicts you disagree with the ideas and behavior, not the people.…

Conflict is a complex condition, it is both a mental phenomena as well as a physical sensation. Certain events in life are inevitable; one being the occurrence of conflict and that once one is faced with conflict, they will react. The two ways one responds to conflict is their fight or flight reaction, they will either face the conflict or attempt to escape it. Times of conflict also summons one to chose action vs apathy. My past laid out upon a table. My GPA, my resume, my test scores. An unfamiliar man whom I met for the first time was frowning, turning around in his creaky red chair, while hurriedly trying to contextualize my life with just a few pieces of paper. For 15 minutes, he sat there, unhappy, tapping his foot, analyzing what I’ve “done” with my life. He took a sip of water and suggested that I go to community college.…

Between February 2013 and January 2014, I worked at four different organizations as an interim administrative assistant. At each of these jobs I answered phones using a multi-line phone system, used a multifunction copier, used Microsoft Word for all the word processing projects, used Microsoft Excel for lists and data that required calculations, and used either Microsoft Outlook, GroupWise, or Lotus for email and calendar. At one organization I used Microsoft Publisher to create a color coded grid for Draft Day activities with leadership responsibilities and I identified an online software program for creating organizational charts. At one of the organizations I recommended a change to the expense form and the accounting department approved and implemented the change. At one of the…

What does it take to become a “Govie” as students at the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics generally refer to themselves? It takes a passion for learning, determination, and the ability to make the most of what you have. For that you are required to take seven college level courses, a two hour lab for all science classes, conduct six-weeks of summer research and still participate in extracurricular activities. I have known Gabby Barry for a little over a year now as her College Counselor at GSSM, a small public two-year residential school for students from across the state of South Carolina.
