My first classes were over the summer so I got a feel of what college was going to be like, and I became even more ecstatic to start. The classes I took were unquestionably more challenging than any high school class I had ever taken, but I was determined to succeed and push myself. The thing I am most envious about is the independence college students

As a child of immigrant parents, whom never passed secondary education, I had been told several times by my mother, “I came here so you can have the opportunities I never had.” I never took her words in for consideration. Being callow was part of the predicament, and my early teenage mindset kept me in captivity. Unlike my mother, I’ve been oblivious to the fact that as a citizen, I’m capable of achieving anything. During my last two years of high school, I realized that she was utterly right.…

It is often said that teenagers begin discovering themselves in high school, but I did the opposite- I lost myself. The source of my pleasure and delight shifted from books to parties, writing to boys, and video-games to my social life. Something within me desperately craved to be normal- to no longer be the girl that gets harassed and ostracized for being an “appalling nerd” and because of this, vital aspects of my personality began to change and I morphed into an entirely different person. Through this journey, I learned that my self-hate was a catalyst for self-love and appreciation. Having always been considered an unusual girl in the eyes of my peers, I'd never been truly comfortable in my skin.…

In many ways I am similar to most seventeen-year-old boys: I enjoy playing sports, eating colossal amounts of food, and hanging out with friends. However, I also enjoy playing the saxophone, taking tests, and doing carpentry work with my father. From my position at the podium, in front of many critical eyes, I was sure that my heartbeat was audible to every set of ears in the classroom. My fingers trembled uncontrollably and while doing so, unknowingly crumpled the sheet of paper that was held between them. In that moment, I was hyperaware of everything that was happening around me. Every blink, every cough, even the constant ticking of the clock at the back of the room made me more uneasy than I already was. I waited patiently, as patiently as I ever had in my life, for the “Go” from my teacher.…

School is a weird place. I say that because if anyone has attended a public school in Mexico, it is a mess. So, the transition to an American school was vastly different that changed my whole perspectives on the purpose of teaching. I soon came to realize that a teacher is immersed in knowledge and passion in their subject matter, they are also aware that they are not only teaching, but touching and affecting their students’ lives, and opening whole new views and appreciations to what is taught.
