The films: Vodou Kingdon, Divine Horsemen, The King Does Not Lie, and Rastamentary explore Afro-Carribean religions by studying, and filming the practices of the Vodou, Santería and Rastafarian religions. These films depict different practices, rituals, ceremonies, ways of living and thought processes. While the religions being depicted are based in islands such as Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica; the very soul of these religions derived from the mother land of Africa. Each film is uniquely diverse, depicting the religions in different ways. The films not only highlight its religion of focus, but it also highlights their connections to Africa, allowing viewers to easily identify similarities within these Afro-Caribbean religions.…

For my final project, I chose to collaborate at the J-cat Cultural Arts Theater under the supervision of Michael Andron. The play that I collaborated on was called “Shrek the musical”. My initial duty in this play was to control the character’s microphones. However, due to low tech staffing, I was offered an open position in lighting, and even though I did not get the chance to be in the booth to control the microphones, I was able to see how both sound and lighting played an important role in this play. Ever since lighting rehearsals started, I was able to see how the lighting changes the mood of the scene and how each actor, when they were in the spotlight, had their own unique story to tell.…

The music of the film does the same thing as the color and atmosphere. It creates a depressing feeling. For example right from the beginning of the film a song starts playing that gives you the feeling that you are dealing with backwoods country and hard life kind of people. I feel it is meant to give you that kind of feeling because the director wants to introduce you into what you are about to witness within the film. Another example of music that creates a kind of feeling in the movie in my opinion is at the end of the film.…
In the Frontline documentary The Release, cameras capture the life of inmates with mental illness inside Ohio’s state prison system. The camaras filmed testimonies from mentally ill inmates, their recount of why they’re in prison, what they believe prison is doing positive and negatively for them. The documentary also portrays how mentally ill people are being treated by the prison wardens, and lengths to which they are force to proceed in order to control an inmate when they’re not behaving or following orders. There are glimpses to how mentally ill inmates have mental/therapeutic evaluations. With the quantity of testimonies Michael Shreeves who was arrested for aggravated robbery stood out.…

In another article with the subject containing women of color and diversity in theatre, Candy Bowers writes, and has an entire discourse on the constant denial of how things really are. Bowers’ article Racism in the theatre world is real and it is debilitating, is filled with frustration and her opinions on how the racism needs to be truly contemplated with a critical eye. Moreover, how we as theatre artists must accurately represent racism. In respect to both Bowers and Cheslaw’s points, again I reference the eight shows I was required to attend in this class.…
The House We Live In has many talking points that involve race. It demonstrates how the institutions and policies in the United States created disadvantages at the detriment of other races. This film showcases how Caucasians used establishments and created policies to benefit and create power for themselves while causing other races drawbacks. The film covers immigration, the lower working class under industrialization, laws and court, and housing. All of these areas and how race played a role in society as we know it today.…

Kids normally do not have any reason to think of alternate interpretations or themes of the media they indulge in. When I was in the eighth grade, I had a friend who frequently busied herself with several activities. I wanted to hang out with her more often, so I joined Drama Club. I auditioned for The Wizard of Oz and my friend and I both landed the roles of flying monkeys. Laura Mulvey on Feminism in Cinema and Theater Laura Mulvey is best known for her essays written in “Visual Pleasures and narrative cinema” published in 1973. In this book she argues that the controlling gaze in cinema and theater is always male. Mulvey’s concept of the “male gaze” is only mentioned twice in “Visual Pleasures and narrative cinema” but it has become the main point in feminist film debate. “The Spectacle is Vulnerable:Miss World 1970” offered a good starting point for the concerns that Mulvey developed in her feminist film theory.
