Collapse: A Short Story

body wants to collapse. Part of me wants to call for help, but I can’t form the words in my mouth, my body is giving in to the fear and hallucinations and I went on the ground. The world is warping and glowing around me, as if I were drugged. I was trying my hardest to crawl away from the library, still hearing the muffled screams of the victims as if they were right behind me. I’m making my way to the grassy spot where me and my friends used to sit every lunch period. I could see them, images of students, faculty, and family set on fire running aimlessly around me. These haunting visions, they were trying to tell me something, but I can’t go on telling people what I see otherwise they could put me in a mental ward. There has to be a …show more content…
The rain stopped for a moment, lightning was flashing every few seconds, the storm was rolling through town tonight. I was drenched but slowly becoming sober enough that I could make my way back to the car. Passing the lockers, trying not to jump every time I hear thunder. The wind was starting to pick up, rolling papers and plastic around, there were beer cans here and there, the construction crew probably take part in this while working, must be nice I said to myself sarcastically. I’m thinking about what, how to present this new batch of information to Carl, he wasn’t the least bit interested in reopening the case, in fact he was hiding something. These thoughts haunt my mind as I start heading back towards the bus yard. Also I remembered there was one more body found in the women’s restroom near the bus yard. I didn’t think of checking there earlier, almost forgot about it. It was on the way there, the bathroom had more police tape, but the door was left unlocked. I go inside, and found a tape outline, the victim was laying face down, a flash of lightning prompted a quick vision of a woman being stabbed and falling to the ground. The blood was dried, one of the mirrors were smashed in, and the sink below it was shattered on the ground. Another mirror next to it had a crack, I also noticed that my face was looking pretty messed up. I went …show more content…
It was a knife, it was the killer, it has to be, and suddenly he charges towards me! Finally, snapping to my senses I started to run towards the bus yard. I can hear his wet footsteps nearing me as I’m trying to lose him in the maze of broken down buses, in a panic I couldn’t remember the exact spot where I came in from. The killer was gradually closing in, I did what I could to lose him, crawling under one of the buses, hoping he’d lose interest in the pursuit. The entire yard was made of gravel so event he slightest movement would create a sound, I have to wait him out and pray he doesn’t find me. This was the real deal, I could call the police, I pulled out my phone to call them… it was dead. So much for that plan, I carefully put my phone away, this bag was starting to become a burden right now, but I can’t leave it here for the killer to find and use the information to find me. I turned to my right and saw a familiar sight, just now I’ve noticed the exact same crawlspace that I went under just below the chain link fence. It was now a small puddle, so I’m probably going to get even wetter and dirtier, but it’s my only escape. Just then, I see the pair of untied boots start to creep right next to the hole. The carefully placed steps on the loose gravel, he was trying to keep his silence and goad me to come out of hiding. He’s dangerously close to the bus I was hiding under. The man came to a complete stop, this was it I thought. This could be the
