Collaborative Strategic Reading Process Analysis

Collaborative Strategic Reading or CSR is a step by step process used by teachers to instruct students on how to comprehend expository text. The initial step is implemented prior to reading by reviewing prior knowledge on the topic being discussed. During reading, the students should use the “Click and Clunk” strategies and “Get the Gist”. “Click or Clunk” asks the students to monitor for unknown words called “Clunks”. When they find these words, they are to use their strategies for determining the meaning of the word. The “Get the Gist” portion is when the students decide what information from the text is the most important. This process ends with the “Wrap Up” during this time is any questions the students may have are answered. . All of the components are valuable to implement in my classroom. The subjects I teach are writing and science. I will be able to use this process to assist students in understanding expository text, which will be very helpful to them. Also, I have found that expository reading and writing are two of the most difficult skills for third graders to learn. The majority of their reading involves narrative type stories instead of expository so they don’t have enough exposure to informative writing. I have not used this particular process of teaching because I was not aware of this procedure. However, I have implemented the preview step of this process but in the form of a KWL chart. This is another way to activate prior knowledge and start the students thinking about questions they may have. In addition, I do preach vocabulary so the students are able to understand the text. However, this step by step process is a valuable method to teach students so they can apply this knowledge to other subjects and throughout their academic
