1. Introduction
The purpose of this paper is to identify what collaborative learning and competitive learning are in regards to adult education. I will discuss what the pros and cons are of each according to recent studies and identify results of what experts claim to be the preferred choice in terms of teaching. As an adult learner and an adult educator, I have found that I can benefit from both learning environments. Initially, the idea of collaborative learning did not sound appealing to me as I am a sufficient independent learner. However, once I was in a group working with several other classmates, I found the level of expertise and experience that was brought to the table to be of value and to be fun. Not only was I learning the subject material, I was learning useful tips, thought processes, and skills of various levels, some of which I still hold on to today.
2. Collaborative Learning
In conducting my research, I was able to easily find a lot of information on collaborative learning. Collaborative learning is an educational approach that requires a group of students to work together to reach a common goal and takes place when the students cooperate to construct a consensus to an open-ended activity. According to Gerlach, “Collaborative learning is based on the idea that learning is a naturally social act in which the participants talk amongst themselves (Gerlach, 1994). It is through the talk that learning occurs.”
