I have realized how conflicting opinions do not need to become disagreements. In my group projects, when a partner and I have differing ideas on how to go about something, I have become better about hearing out why they prefer their option and accepting that it is probably just as good as mine. This was challenging for me at first, because I am a bit of a control freak and frequently feel that my decisions for projects are the best, but throughout the course of this class I have learned to be more receptive to the input from others. This openness is an integral part of being a good leader (Shankman, Allen, & Haber-Curran, 2015, p. 168), the type of which must “consider multiple perspectives” as well as “provides and accepts ideas and suggestions in a constructive and helpful manner”. These were incredibly intimidating for me when we first brought up the topic in class. However, I now feel confident to display my listening skills and be evaluated, because I enjoy the feedback and insight of others. I also enjoyed the real life scenarios where I could adopt all the lessons we had learned in class or from the texts to listening to another person. This was such an area of growth for me because looking back to where I started, I can see how I uniquely applied summarizing, open ended questions, open body language, or even silence to the conversations we practiced. I would not have thought at the beginning of the semester I would ever be comfortable sitting in a small room while being observed on my listening skills. Yet after these scenarios, I can imagine how I will need to be an unbiased and attentive listener in the future.
