It is necessary to mention that it takes a team spirit to run a health care organization. Therefore, it is imperative for all members of a committee, even if they are part of medical personnel, the management, or the representatives, to grasp the concept of shared governance and the proponents that compromise an efficient governance approach (Choi & Robertson, 2014). Furthermore, each healthcare organization work with interdisciplinary crews like the Infection Control Committee (ICC) and the Safety Committee to reduce employee and patient risk. Even though, the patients may not broadly know the existences of any of these committees. Fortunately, the ICC plays an essential component in every patient …show more content…
In the meeting, the author observed that the members of this committee consist of the hospital administrator, hospital microbiologist as the chairperson, infection control nurse (ICN), infectious diseases physician, and the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO). Then, there was an occupational health physician, risk management personnel, quality assurance personnel as well as representatives from other major departments such as pharmacy, central sterilization, surgery, and environmental services. This multidisciplinary committee meets monthly to report to the hospital administrator and is responsible for supervising program policies implementation and propose corrective actions. Furthermore, it sets up standards for patient care, analyzes and evaluates infection control (IC) reports, and determines the area of interventions. However, each member of the committee has a particular role. For instance, the hospital microbiologist or the infectious diseases physician serve as the infection control physician who has the functions to coordinate to ICC and ensure infection control activities. The ICN plays a vital role and is responsible to actively participate in the development of policies and guidelines, supervise and analyze hospital infection data, and educate nursing staffs and hospital personnel about IC practices. The other members of the ICC are accountable for daily functions …show more content…
Furthermore, shared governance is a constantly evolving system that relies on the enthusiasm and empowerment of the professionals who are taking care of the patient (Taylor, 2016). While attending, the author observed collaborative decision-making for one of the issues presented. For instance, the IC teams made the ICC aware of the increase rate of the Catheter-associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI) within the hospital. They came up with evidence-based practices that prove if using this special wipe to clean the catheter daily will decrease the rate of CAUTI. After discussing the benefits and the costs to implement the presented solution, a collaborative decision-making was done by using the unanimity rule. According to Choi & Robertson (2014), the conformity rule has been identified as impeding effective decision making in collaborative cases as opposed to using the majority rule left many people dissatisfied and lessened the deliberation process. At the end of the process, each member of the ICC was happy with the decision, and a new policy is in the process to prevent CAUTI rates within the
