Collaboration In Gifted Education

Complete, coordinated services for students with advanced learning skills require a shared commitment and continuing collaboration between general and gifted education professionals and families. I believe that high quality collaboration does not remove the need for gifted education services or for gifted education specialists, but rather redefines the roles of educators in the plan for serving gifted and talented students. Collaboration calls for joint responsibility for identifying indicators of giftedness and responding to those unique characteristics through more comprehensive and individualized programming options. Collaboration builds a community of understanding educators who create learning environments that are more challenging and …show more content…
Collaboration improves understanding and trust among educators and students, helps promote connections between schools and parents, and helps develop more positive attitudes toward gifted education, and increases opportunities for all students.

Funding for gifted education is limited, with additional budget cuts occurring from year to year. In order to keep gifted programs funded, it is vital that we improve public opinion and awareness of the benefits of quality educational options for gifted students. Educating the general public about the characteristics and needs of gifted students is of highest importance in gaining community support. Presenting clear facts and information regarding current research can help improve the public's knowledge and observations of gifted children and the programs that serve these exceptional students. As taxpayers, citizens play an essential role in the appropriation of funds for various programs that affect gifted education. As stakeholders in the system, these same community members need to be made aware of the influence gifted programming can have on both students and the community as a whole. By including the community with what is going on in the school district, specifically the gifted programs, it will help to solidify the importance of the successful learning of these
