Colin Wilson Non Conformism

"The average man is a conformist, accepting miseries and disasters with the stoicism of a cow standing in the rain." This is a quote by Colin Wilson. It tells us his views on conformism and the human nature of others. Most people don’t feel that they are independent enough to become a non-conformist. Conformism is something that most people do and Colin Wilson is trying to share that in this quote. Becoming a non-conformist is a little hard because most people want to fit in and roll with the group. They look at all the images that the world portrays as beautiful and they get discouraged and don’t want to do their own thing, they want to be like everyone else. Somebody comes up with a trend and everyone else just follows because that’s their place in this world, or so they think. Conformity comes down to people understanding their potential in life. If everyone understood what they could achieve and didn’t just do as good as the next person than everyone would be non-conformists, but because this is not the case everyone looks around and what everyone else is doing and follows that. Most people can’t do things by themselves, especially girls. Girls go everywhere with their friends and family, even to the bathroom. There are few people in this world that don’t care what others think about them and they do what they want to. In this world, there are many different kinds of people who are many different ethnicities and who live in different cultures. This shows many different types of conformity, especially in different countries. It would seem that someone from Africa would have a different opinion about it then someone from Wyoming. This is why conformity is such a hard thing to understand. Glaucon talks about how the story about the Myth of Gyges is how humans are. If they are presented with something like the ring in the myth, then they won’t use it for good. They will do evil with it. This connects to conformity because conformity is something that he or she can either do for good or bad. Glaucon says that he ro she has the chance to use it in a good way, but it is human nature to use that power for bad. Conformity can be good, in that everyone can work together and make the world a better place. They can conform to make the world a better place and fitting in would be a good thing. Conformity is something that now makes people feel terrible about themselves because they see the magazines and other media and want the perfect body. They believe that the perfect body will make them fit in with the popular crowd. The conformists believe that if they have that perfect body they will be liked and noticed, this is most people in our society’s goal.
