Emerson once said, "To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment." Man will never be able to fully eradicate conformity, because it is human nature to a certain degree, but one can prevent the unnecessary conformity. The brave few who follow the path less traveled often finds it a rewarding experience. If one can escape the repertoire of life expectations, their roadmap of vitality will be as colorful as Neapolitan ice cream. Colin Wilson was a man with a dream to see humankind move beyond their conformist tendencies.

What is his definition of average? Economically speaking, the average man is indeed more likely to be a conformist because it is the predominant social class. Therefore, those individuals are bound to end up doing things the same because of their opportunities and income. "Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth." (Kennedy). Man will never be able to grow unless he lets go of conformity, as suggested in this quote. Unless Wilson was just trying to be it-gets-dark-at-night obvious, he should further elaborate on what sense man is becoming the average. It is possible that Wilson was speaking in generals. Maybe his idea of an average man was someone who's isn't a millionaire, has bills to pay, an imperfect family life, and less than satisfying career choices.
From Wilson's quote readers can certainly identify him as a pessimist. It is in his own opinion to think that there is such an issue with conformity. Although in reality, people, at least in this generation, have been going out of their way to be a bit more original. "Rebel children, I urge you, fight the turgid slick of conformity with which they seek to smother your glory." (Brand).
