Conformity vs. Individuality
An Interpretation of Colin Wilson’s Quote Colin Wilson is one of few people who can take a step back from their lives and the world around them and see the bigger picture. Wilson’s quote; “The average man is a conformist, accepting miseries and disasters with the stoicism of a cow standing in the rain,” is a perfect example of this. It is true that most people in the world are followers of whatever they see happening around them. Unfortunately, few are able to recognize their willingness to follow the “norm,” and consequently are stuck in a conformist lifestyle throughout their entire life. However, there are also the men and women who choose to be conformists, fully aware of what they are doing. Someone who chooses conformity is most likely

Whether it has been followed so long that it is trained into the mind, or conformity is just the easier decision, many adults stick to a conformist routine in life. Once someone grows older and begins accepting more responsibilities in their life, they seem to adopt a personality of accepting whatever comes at them. Whether it be suffering through a job they don’t enjoy, a marriage, or accepting discrimination from others, people learn to take trouble in stride and ignore it, to some extent. They act like cows in the rain; not troubled by any storm or disaster, just standing stoically. Sometimes it is seen as easier to accept what’s happening and not take a stand of individuality against certain situations. Colin Wilson’s quote puts the action of being a conformist in a bad light, to some extent. He describes conformity to an animal, which is not an ideal situation to be compared to. Wilson was most likely trying to persuade the average man or woman into becoming more of an individual and making his/her own

Leopard Man In his article, “The Sociology of Leopard Man,” Logan Feys believes that people that do not conform to society are freaks. Feys supports his belief through the use of pathos. Feys purpose is to satirize people who do not conform, in order to convince the audience that non-conformist are “freaks,” Fey uses pessimism with his intended audience. While I generally agree with Logan Fey’s statement about individuality, I found some of his positions to be quite extreme.…

He is saying that an average person has no backbone and doesn’t have the guts to stand up for himself. These people would say about conformity that it helps things run smoothly and avoids many of the pitfalls of disharmony. Those in support of this view are rather in tune with Plato's conception of the idea of unity as a necessity for the success of any group of people, and the lack thereof as a catalyst for their decline. Those Platonic scholars who disagree with the idea of conformity as a virtue seem to see in it echoes of the Thrasymican argument, as it seems to suggest that the majority of the citizens of the earth just has to deal with whatever the powerful throw at them. Colin Wilson seems to possess the latter view, but with a rather Machiavellian tint to his view when he says, "The average man is a conformist, accepting miseries and disasters with the stoicism of a cow standing in the rain. " This quote is very telling in a few ways.…

From my understanding a conformist is someone that is more than likely to convert or follow someone else within a certain thought process or decision someone is making. I believe it to be self evident that in today’s society men are not conformist, but rather individually independent. I have been attending school for nearly twelve years and one thing that I have been constantly taught was the ways of being independent and standing out as an individual that differs from others. Many would say the idea is all about being your own person. Some say, “be a…

Most people find it easier to rely on others and to be a social conformist rather than being a social non-conformist. Being a social conformist is easier because you do not have to explain why you want to be different or why you refuse to give in to peer pressure. People tend to find it easier to deal with peer pressure if they follow the crowd. When undergoing peer pressure, a lot of the time it is easier to do what others do instead of having to explain yourself. In Lord of the Flies, at first everyone followed Ralph because he was the one who blew the conch and no one seemed to care about Jack’s opinion, so Jack ended following Ralph as well.…

Now that we have covered an opinion that see’s conformity as something positive, let's see it from a new perspective. Common sense seems to dictate that it is better to be individuals than to conform with society. In an article I found that talks about Thoreau’s view of conformity and individuality and it says that “Henry David Thoreau, a Transcendentalist, believed that individuals should be self-reliant and live a simple life.” I agree with Thoreau because we should all only be pendent of ourselves and not be working so hard to fit in with the norms of society which is to work unfulfilling jobs just so we can buy materialistic things that we truly don't need, because you wouldn't be living a simple life we would just be “conforming to prescribed…

In this day and age, conformity is what decides who people are and what their future will look like. Normally when people think of conformity, the negative connotations associated with the word come to mind. For instance, teens doing drugs or drinking alcohol because friends or siblings tell them it’s okay to do so. However, I don’t think conformity is always a bad thing, and I first hand experienced the positive effects of conforming.…

Absurdism fiction is a type of fictional narrative where the characters are unable to find a purpose in life and the lack of purpose is usually shown in meaningless activities. Absurdism is also a philosophical school of thought where humans effort to find definite purpose in life will fail because of the vast amount of things unknown to them. Kevin Wilson is an American writer, and educator, he released a collection of short stories titled Tunneling to the Center of the Earth: Stories in 2009 (Kevin Wilson). Two short stories in the collection that exhibit the traits of absurdism fiction are “Tunneling to the Center of the Earth,” and “’Blowing up on the Spot”. In the two stories, Wilson uses absurdism and an isolating setting to explore the truth of how people want a reason to live, but life does not inherently provide one, so people must create or find their own.…

It describes how humans in society have constantly been plagued with crazes and manias, and how these delusions affect people. By observing and conforming to the social norm, we are partaking in mob mentality. We base what is right and wrong on what the majority of people are doing or thinking. Society’s pressure is so strong, our opinions and morals sway with the general acceptance of a strong leader or a majority of our peers.…

As stated earlier, censorship is the first domino that causes all these things to happen to these people, but they are powerless to stop it because there is no one to lead them to think differently. The worst thing is that the censorship has been going on for so long that the people don’t even care anymore. Faber said, “It 's not books you need, it 's some of the things that once were in books.... The same infinite detail and awareness could be projected through radios and televisors, but are not” (Bradbury). This shows that even though they lived in a technologically based society they still could’ve projected thought and free thinking.…
