“The average man is a conformist, accepting miseries and disaster with the stoicism of a cow standing in the rain,” said by Colin Wilson. A conformist is a person who conforms to accepted behavior or established practices and stoicism is the endurance of pain or hardship without display of feelings and without complaint. This quote is meaning, like cows in the rain we are often paralyzed not by a lack of will, but fear of an imagined outcome. A conformist is someone that goes with the flow, and doesn’t show much emotion. A conformist is a follower, not a leader. To be a leader you have to step out of your comfort zone, and make decisions and have a voice. I agree with Wilson’s quote, because people don’t want to step out of their comfort zone, they are scared of …show more content…
When someone is in their comfort zone they are at a place or situation where one feels safe or at ease and without stress. Everyone has their own comfort zone, for some it’s their house, the gym, or their car. In some cases though, a “comfort zone” isn’t always a physical space, it’s a way of life that avoids anything that might be painful. Some could find relief by doing drugs, internet surfing, or drinking alcohol. Being a conformist, taking a step out of your comfort zone is a hard step to take, but eventually it has to be done. Most don’t want to step out of their comfort zone because they are afraid of being judge and put down. Although, being a conformist, or like Colin compared it to the cow, you won’t get anywhere in life. Like he said the cow standing in the rain, you won’t ever be happy just going with the flow and being content in your own comfort zone. One has to realize that humans come in different colors, shapes, and sizes and they have to be comfortable in their own skin no matter what others say. Obviously, people are conformists because they don’t want to step out of their comfort

In the film “Dead Poet Society” Mr. Keating has his students standing on top of his desk look around the classroom (Dead Poet Society). This scene illustrates that we need to look at things in different perspectives. If an individual always follow one direction then we can never learn anything new. Another example to identify conformity is in the article “ The Sociology of Leopard Man”, Fey stated “Seceding from society, as Leopard Man has done, would certainly free us from social pressures” (Fey1). This quote demonstrates that we should look up to Leopard Man and what he’s done and not feel the pressure when being non-conformist in front of…

From the moment we are born we enter a society where it is the norm to conform and obey. From a very young age we learn that if we do not obey then we will suffer the consequences for these actions. People within society have a desire to be accepted and to belong; whether to a group or a family this social influence can change our thoughts, feeling and even our behaviour. So can we truly be an individual or are we pre-defined by a set of social boundaries? ‘Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth’ (J F. Kennedy).…

From my understanding a conformist is someone that is more than likely to convert or follow someone else within a certain thought process or decision someone is making. I believe it to be self evident that in today’s society men are not conformist, but rather individually independent. I have been attending school for nearly twelve years and one thing that I have been constantly taught was the ways of being independent and standing out as an individual that differs from others. Many would say the idea is all about being your own person. Some say, “be a…

Kevin Wilson is an American writer, and educator, he released a collection of short stories titled Tunneling to the Center of the Earth: Stories in 2009 (Kevin Wilson). Two short stories in the collection that exhibit the traits of absurdism fiction are “Tunneling to the Center of the Earth,” and “’Blowing up on the Spot”. In the two stories, Wilson uses absurdism and an isolating setting to explore the truth of how people want a reason to live, but life does not inherently provide one, so people must create or find their own.…
