Colin Powell is a man with many visions. He is a leader that most would follow in any given situation. In an article published by Johns Hopkins, Powell stated, “a leader is not a leader without followers. The purpose of a leader is to empower followers to get the job done” (Soldier and Statesman: Colin Powell on Leadership, 2007) and that is what he does. As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Powell used Full Range Leadership Development behaviors, specifically individualized consideration. He always kept the lines of communication open. When he held meetings, he would ask his subordinates for their input and he would also listen to their concerns. His actions showed that he cared for and valued them. Powell was also adaptive.
