General (Retired) Colin Powell has stated that he believes a good leader has the quality to make decisions that everyone can understand. This ability to make tough decisions where their intent and impact can be understood through out a command is one of the key pieces to being an effective leader. I expect for a senior Warrant Officer to articulately express their intent in a manner that can respected by the highest reaching Field Grade Officer and still understood by the lowest ranking person that most execute their order.

b. Another element of leadership that is discussed by General (Retired) Colin Powell is where he states that “Effective leaders are made, not born”. This statement implies that it is the duty of a senior Warrant Officer

ADP 6-22, states “Leadership involves at least two people or groups, one which leads and another which follows”, this illustrates the need for the existence of the subordinate, they are not people who are in the way but instead they are the individuals that allow the senior to exist. General (Retired) Powell states, "The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help them or concluded that you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership.", so when General (Retired) Powell makes the statement "Don't let adverse facts stand in the way of a good decision”, these are the situations he speaks of. As a leader one must be someone that soldiers can express concerns to, and approach when they seek solutions to their problems, not someone that allows for their inability to self resolve these problems to skew the manner in which the soldier is viewed. We must check the small things and share credit, Powell states regarding two of the most forgotten parts of leadership. When checking the small things, we see the convoluted details that often get overlooked when just trying to look at the big picture. Checking the small things allows for no detail of planning or support to be overlooked or leave anything forgotten. The importance of sharing credit works to emphasize that though the leader is in charge and responsible for the overall outcome nothing is a single effort that can be accomplished without the joint efforts of the leader’s guidance and the subordinates work.
