Colin Kaepernick’s protest showed immense patriotism. Colin Kaepernick, former quarterback for the 49ers held a protest last year that caused quite the controversy. Kaepernick's protest was used to protest the recent and past police brutality toward African American individuals and show his support for the black lives matter movement. Kaepernick showed his protest by kneeling during the national anthem, which many have strong opinions on how effective and patriotic his protest is. Kaepernick's emotions shown in Powell's article,are much needed in order for his protest to be patriotic. The inclusion of emotions shows that Kaepernick is truly involved in this protest and that it is coming from a place of deep devoted love for America and especially the citizens. A love for the country and its citizens is what truly makes a protest or person patriotic. Unlike Powell and Zirin Sally Jenkins does not discuss the emotions and willingness to die, but speaks of the actions within the protest. Within Jenkins Washington Post article titled “There are two sides to the NFL anthem debate, and both are right. And wrong.”, When speaking of Kaepernick's protest Jenkins states, “The only Un-American thing would be if people were afraid to express how they feel on either side of the argument”. This remark made by Jenkins speaks to the fact that patriotism isn’t about how you are treating a piece of cloth or a song, but if you are doing the things that the flag symbolises. While Kaepernick's protest getting so much publicity many may look at that and say that the publicity gained is amazing for Kaepernick's cause.While on the contrary, it has weakened both Kaepernick’s message and his impact. When examining President Trumps speech in Huntsville, Alabama there are many shared opinions, but the is a group targeted towards Kaepernick and his protest. Trump tells Americans that Kaepernick’s protest is used to disrespect the flag and viewer should turn off the TV and leave the stadium. Trump can also be heard sharing that the owners need to fire the players that kneel.Although Kaepernick’s protest began effective it has turned into a slew of multiple messages opinions and uncertainness. In Order for a protest to be effective the message has to be clear and concise or else the intended changes will never happen. Trump very clearly demonstrates that Kaepernick’s massage has been taken into a different direction. Adding on to the understanding of Kaepernick's impact the article “Black & Blue” published in Junior Scholastic. When looking at recent statistics in the article such as that still “90% of the time when officers use force, it is against a black suspect.” there is a great divide between the protest and statistics.
