He truly believed that nothing was going to get better, until tragedy struck. As he nears what he thinks is death, he undergoes many sudden changes. These changes that occur prove Cole Matthews to be a dynamic character in Part 1 of Touching Spirit Bear. Throughout the book, Cole thinks a lot about his family, his idea of trust, the differences between life and death, and the choices he has the power to make. At the beginning Cole shows to be stubborn and bitter but, as the book progresses, he changes a lot. Maybe those changes are for a good reason.

When readers are first introduced to Cole, they can notice that he has problems with trust. He doesn't believe that he can rely on anyone, not even his own family. Cole doesn't truly trust anyone in the book until he touches the spirit bear. At that moment he has an epiphany and realized that you must trust to be trusted. Learning how to trust changes Cole. He realizes the importance of trust in relationships. As he changes his opinion, Cole's personality changes and piece by piece, changes who he is.

Stereotypes are present in society, but it may be difficult to discuss and to further change or overcome them. However, humor can be used as a device to allow a serious topic to be more approachable by relying on preposterous situations. Through the use of dark humor in Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot, John Callahan breaks these stigmas and illustrates an outrageous view of disability in order to show the irrationality of the stereotype or stigma portrayed. Throughout this work, Callahan directly attacks the stereotypes regarding disability and illustrates the realistic portrayal of disability and offers a solution, through humor, to overcome the societal prejudices.…
