In all stories there is a conflict. Cole Mathews faces many different conflicts throughout the story. Cole has to deal with these conflicts and only he is in control of whether or not they get resolved. Cole Matthews has had a rough and troubled childhood, with an abusive father and a mother who can’t admit that his father is bad. Because of these things Cole has found violence and crime as a way to get his anger out but this is not the right way to do so because he has gotten in a lot of trouble because of his actions. If Cole cannot change from the way he is now his life will not be good. He got in a lot of trouble because he beat up a kid named Peter Driscoll on the side of the street and left him with a speech impediment .Cole is now being sent to a banishment island for one year as a way to make him learn that he needs to change.Cole was only there and had to leave temporarily because he was mauled by a spirit bear. After he had recovered he was sent back to the island to finish his 1 year banishment. This is true because all they know about Cole is that he does bad things. Most people also aren’t aware of Cole’s change in heart yet. This conflict is a Man Vs Society because it is saying that society, as in the people who know who Cole is have the mindset that Cole does bad things, and they also aren’t aware of how much Cole has actually changed because of banishment. The only people who truly understand the changes cole has gone through are Edwin, Garvey, Peter, and the people apart of the circle. The way cole partially overcomes this is by letting the people of the circle see and notice that Cole has changed and by them knowing it could possibly spread throughout the people who know
