By backing the countries and nations that were anti-communist, the US was able to gain allies and effectively contain communism, for the most part. At one point in time, the US had allies all across the globe that were against communism and wanted to contain it just as much as the US did. Eventually all the hard work and military spending of this containment had paid off. The USSR had eventually collapsed due to economic troubles and this was great news to the US government. This helped to mark the end of the Cold War and the containment policy. Today we have a similar yet different foreign policy than we did during the era of communism and the Cold War. Today, the US looks to protect their interests and keep its allies like minded, similar to the Cold War era. Only now, the US is trying to help maintain a world in which nations can thrive and become successful, to become prosperous. The US is still on alert for any threats to the national security of the nation and its allies, but has eased up a bit on pointing fingers at things the government doesn't fully understand. The US continues to attempt to promote world peace and now is even focusing on putting an end to one other problem and threat that has appeared, global warming and climate change.
