Civilians, just like the soldiers, struggled with uncertainty of how their lives would be after the war. This is portrayed through Ada, who has a lot uncertainty. If Inman will return, how she will keep the farm in good condition, and how will she survive? Ada is not the only woman who went through this struggle almost every woman went through it if their husband or sons went off to fight. Another struggle of civilians during the war is that in most towns, most the men leave to fight leaving all the women by themselves. As well as portraying actual struggle of the Civil War, the book also portrays an actual group called Home Guard. Most people don’t even know about home guard so this book could also teach some people about the civil war. Home Guard is a group of individuals whose jobs are to find deserters and capture them. The home guard was very cruel to people, they normally did not capture them; they would torture and kill them like they did to the Swanger family.
