Usability Report on Cogstate’s Brief Battery
Louis Gurrieri
Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology

Executive Summary
The Cogstate Brief Battery is a cognitive battery that is designed to assess aspects of working memory and processing speed. It is a computerised test comprised of tasks such as the Detection Task (DET), One Card Learning Task (OCL). All the tasks involve the use of playing cards as the stimuli for the tests, and by using cards it is easy to understand for most people, as normal playing cards aren’t specific to only one culture. Since the playing cards are an easy stimuli to understand, they can be used across many different cultures, and understood by people at nearly any age. As long as they can

The first two tasks of the battery are scored by the milliseconds that it takes the person to answer, whereas the last two tests are scored on the amount of correct answers given by the participant.
The first task that is presented in the battery is a Detection Task. This task lasts for about 2 minutes, and measures psychomotor function and speed of processing. A lower score in a Detection Task is better, as when the score is low, that means its fast which means that participant has a higher speed of processing. The participants have to respond “yes” as soon as the card flips over.
The third task is a One Card Learning Task, this is to measure visual learning and memory and lasts for 5 minutes. The participants have to respond “yes” or “no” when the card comes up, “yes” if the card has come up before during the task and “no” if the card hasn’t come up before. This is scored by the amount of correct answers the participants given and therefore the higher the score, the

Most of the instructions were clear and structured well and easy to understand and they were put simply. Although a problem I noticed throughout the whole time I was doing the tasks was that even though it stated at the beginning of the test that you would complete practices before the actual test, during the tasks, it got confusing as to whether it was a practice or the actual test.
The auditory and visual feedback during the actual tests was good yet inconsistent. Sometimes if I had made an error it would make an error sound, stop and not continue until I had answered correctly. Whereas other times it would just make the error sound but continue on. Although only a minor problem, it still made it a bit unclear if I had gotten it correct or not. The practice tests had better feedback then the actual tests, during the practice tests, they had ticks and congratulatory messages or encouraging messages as you went along so you knew if your answers were right or not.

Was the testing environment conducive to you giving accurate responses? I was the only person in the room using the computer, so I would say that the environment was cooperative for concentrating. I also liked the fact that It was not timed, so it was a relaxing quiet environment. How long did it take you to complete the SII? It took me 45 minutes.…

Assignment Questions 1. List three things you learned about assessment and measurement in the context of the video discussions. First and foremost, properly conceived assessment is an essential aspect of education. The educational review process and all associated components should be routinely examined to ensure quality as well as make improvements. Because learning is a very complex endeavor, it is important to create measurement instruments that are sufficiently comprehensive and applicable (Gronlund, 2013).…

Jeffrey, I agree, the instant feedback that Shadow Health gives was very helpful. Knowing right away that area of the assessment that could be improved upon was helpful for me to understand the importance of it. My one critique is that I found I asked the same question over and over for different body systems. It would have been nice if that information could auto-populate on the texting screen prior to starting the question/answer portion of the exam. I understand the same question may be relevant for different systems, however, we had the same patient throughout the class.…

Introduction Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a rare, progressive brain disorder that causes memory loss. FTD describes a range of diseases that often start with changes in behavior, speech, and decision-making processes. As FTD progresses, it affects short-term memory. Over time, FTD causes the frontal and temporal anterior lobes of the brain to shrink. These are the parts of the brain that control behavior and speech.…

The reason why I chose the assessment I did was because it focused on different cognitive domains. This test is taking to see if they have early signs of dementia. I thought it would be a good assessment to give because it was straightforward and well put together. The focus on this test was attention, executive functions, memory, and calculations. The assessment gave you two parts of the assessment the instructions that go along with the exam.…

Introduction Sleep is an important component for maintaining, sustaining, and optimizing academic performance. Different lifestyle needs fluctuate the amount of sleep between individuals and often led them to attain inadequate sleep. Sufficient sleep has been linked to the enhancement of emotional and social function, whereas insufficient sleep reduces cognitive function and negatively affects academic readiness (Deuster & Yarnell, 2016). Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles have collected data on performances based on sleep patterns on participants through a series of tests known as the Computer Memory Interference Test (CMIT).…

Methods Neurocognitive Assessment: Neurocognitive assessment will be performed by a team of trained psychologist. Patients will be evaluated using classical well-validated paradigms designed to measure a set cold and hot executive functions in a touch screen interactive platform (Cold functions: sustained attention, shifting attention, response inhibition, working memory; hot functions: conditioned learning, sensibility to reward). The system allows to individualize the characteristics (response time, correct/incorrect trials, etc.) of the responses from each one of the presented stimuli, with important flexibilities for posterior data analysis. The following paradigms were pre-selected for this study: Attentional Blink,49 CPT,50 Flanker Test,51…

In simulation this week, I was effective in remembering the majority of the steps for the head to toe (I always seem to forget orientation and capillary refill). I quickly realized at the end if I had left out any steps and by the end of simulation I felt much more confident in completing a head to toe exam. I also did a good job of noticing what my peers missed during their head to toe exam.…

Current research into gender differences in creativity is inconclusive. The majority of research into creativity stems from Guilford’s (1950) work. Although it, marginally, infers a relationship between gender and creativity, there is evidence to the contrary, such as Goldsmith and Matherly (1998) and Henderson (2003). Creativity is the ability to exhibit creative behaviour to a noteworthy degree (Guilford, 1950). Guildford identified several key principles of creativity (fluency and flexibility).…
