Cognitive Remediation Therapy

Article Overview: I read an article on NCBI recently that discussed the efficacy of cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) in improving the cognitive functioning, social functioning, and insight for individuals diagnosed with chronic schizophrenia (Lu, Li, Jiao, Li, Shi, Guo, & Liu, 2012). The study design used to assess the efficacy of CRT was a randomized control trial. Participates for this experiment were patients who were hospitalized from March to December of 2010 at the Third People’s Hospital of Lanzhou Municipality. According to Lu et al. (2012), individuals that met the following criteria were screened to participate in this experiment: diagnosed with chronic schizophrenia with a duration of illness >5years, clinically stable at …show more content…
Study Protocol: Lu et al. (2012) conducted a randomized control trial on 126 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. The participants were randomly allocated to either the CRT group or the treatment as usual group (TAU). Inferential statistics was used to determine the effects of CRT on a population.
Data Collection: This experiment was conducted over a 3 month period. The individuals in both the CRT and TAU groups received treatment five days per week. The dependent variable were the results experienced by patients due to the different therapies. The independent variable was the different therapy methods. I believe that a cofounding variable exist due to the fact that different therapist were used for the CRT group and the TAU group. This can adversely affect the relation between the independent variable and the dependent variable

Before and after results were compared using a paired t-test, and an independent t-test was used to compare baseline scores. An F-test was also used to compare differences in the magnitude of the changes between the CRT and the TAU groups. We can conclude that there is no statistically significance of improvement in individuals that were involved in the CRT compared to the TAU (p=0.074). Therefore, they have failed to reject the null

Therapeutic Program Evaluation Completing accurate and detailed assessments and documenting milestones throughout the intervention can help the practitioner ensure that the treatment is working. In CBT, evaluation is an ongoing process (Coady & Lehmann, 2016). Since it uses an empowering, collaborative approach, clients are responsible for providing frequent and honest data for the evaluation process (Coady & Lehmann, 2016). The assessment tools, such as the DASS, ProCannabis and schizophrenia severity scales can be duplicated regularly to ensure the client is receiving the maximum benefit from the therapeutic process. Also, CBT produces many documents that can be used as well such as any journaling written by the client, any self-monitoring…

Many people with schizophrenia do not take treatment because of the possible side effects and/or other reasons such as social stigma. After medication and the psychotic symptoms are in check, psychosocial therapy can be a great way to help deal with behavioral problems, such as difficulty with communication, motivation, self-care, and relationships (Berk,…

The biological explanation has led to the development of anti-psychotic drugs, which are widely used today. In contrast, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the most common treatment which is based on the psychological explanation. While both of these treatments have shown to be effective in reducing the symptoms of SZ, it can be argued that drugs only mask the symptoms, while CBT teaches the individual to control their symptoms. These two treatments are often used in conjunction with one another in order to target all aspects of…

Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT) is used to treat a variety of different illnesses, emotional, behavioral or psychiatric problems (Nickerson, 2016), which includes schizophrenia. It works by helping individuals identifying unhelpful thoughts and behaviors and relearn healthier skills and practices. The strategy employed by CBT is to look inside one's actions, emotions, and thoughts and see how each affects the other. The rationale behind this therapy is that thoughts can influence feelings, which then can affect one's behavior and if the process behind the initial thought is changed, it will lead to an overall change in behavior. CBT has been researched on extensively and has been practiced for more than 30 yrs with demonstrated effectiveness.…

The purpose of the study was to determine whether a home-based activity program known as the Tailored Activity Program; (TAP-VA), as compared to a control group, could decrease the severity of behavioral symptoms among veterans with dementia. Additionally, the study wanted to explore how the TAP-VA may also affect caregiver burden, client's functional decline, and the time that a caregiver spends caring for the client. This study was a parallel, randomized control trial which falls under a level I of evidence. Also this study was single blind as the interviewer who assessed the participants over the course of the study was not aware of which participants were split among the two groups. The study was conducted over the span of eight months, with interviewers assessing…

In the current study, we developed and evaluated scales to measure HAPA concepts regarding physical activity among diabetic patients. Psychometric testing in this study provides preliminary evidence that the HAPA scales are valid and reliable measures for variables of this model. Both factor analysis and structural equation modeling confirmed the construct validity of the scales. Nevertheless, further research is required to address some overlaps between the belief measures. It is evident that a person’s beliefs and cognitions may not occur uniquely and they can influence each other, thus it may be impossible to sort out unique belief measures (31).…

Children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD face an array of cognitive and behavioral challenges. Response to these challenges logically requires a multi-faceted approach. Empirical evidence has demonstrated that medication is proven to be effective in the management of ADHD symptoms. Further empirical evidence has demonstrated that behavioral therapy is shown to produce positive, long-term outcomes for children and adolescents. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with a focus on self-guidance and strategic problem solving has thus far been the most successful behavioral therapy approach to this population.…

There are no clearly established methods to treat schizophrenia nor are there clearly established drugs to aid in the help of it. It is ultimately important to keep this in mind: A person‐centered approach to treating schizophrenia can facilitate establishing and maintaining a therapeutic alliance (Stevens, Dawson & Zummo, 2016). Through this relationship, clinicians can assist patients in understanding the clinical and personal benefits of being treated (Stevens, et al., 2016). The therapeutic alliance is ultimately key and rather antipsychotics are truly necessary is based upon what that therapist and that client…

The nature of people View of human nature. My choice theoretical approach is cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which contains components of rational behavior therapy (REBT) and cognitive therapy (CT). I believe that humans are born with both rational and irrational thinking. People actually have the tendencies to want to be happy, grow, and self-actualize, but also to be self-destructive, procrastinate, and self-blame (Corey, 2009). Humans have both biologically and culturally crooked thinking tendencies.…

To answer this question, we should understand what is reliability and validity first. According to David S. (2010), objectivity and credibility are the technical terms that reliability and validity of the research refer to. Polgar, S. and Thomas, S.A. stated that accuracy of the test procedure is what validity concerned with. They also pointed out that reliability is the characteristic of reproducibility and consistency of the results of a measurement step. There are different types of test validity and reliability, for example, content validity, predictive validity, test-retest reliability and inter-observer reliability.…

A widely accepted cause of autism that sparked controversy among professionals and parents was the popularity of the “refrigerator mother” theory. A theory that placed blame and guilt on parents, notably mothers of children with autism. Leo Kanner believed that a child’s inability to bond or connect within their environment was a result of limited affection, coldness, and solidarity displayed by the parents. Bettelheim facilitated this theory that children with autism were similar to “prisoners in concentration camps and parents were portrayed as guards” (Zager, Wehmeyer & Simpson, 2012, p. 4) asserting parental power and control. Kanner later rejected his theory and a shift occurred with Rimland’s idea suggesting that autism was a neurodevelopment…

At some point, every person has sneezed. In these brief moments of air expulsion, people almost become slaves to their brain’s commands, losing control of their body in that instant. Despite vigorous attempts to refuse the order, the brain’s hardwired response to minor stimuli has been shown to snottily win out time and time again, whether a person is sitting on the bus, giving a presentation at school or sitting in a silent library. For people with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), these suddenly triggered actions come in the form of anxiety-driven compulsions, which occur so frequently that these seemingly uncontrollable actions can be a detriment to a person’s quality of life and health. Hence, scientists and doctors have experimented…

Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy is a treatment method that attempts to improve cognitive deficits to enhance safety, current functioning, and independence to further increase overall quality of life (Sohlberg & Mateer, 2001). This approach involves a wide range of therapeutic techniques and activities to assist in the restoration of brain functions and the counteraction of cognitive deficits through the use of newly learned compensatory strategies (Saux, Demey, Rojas, & Feldberg, 2014). These techniques include, but are not limited to, Direct Process Training, Skill Specific Training, and the use of compensatory strategies including environmental modifications, metacognition, and internal and external aids (Sohlberg & Mateer, 2001).
