Cognitive Lens Affective Study

Decent Essays
Cognitive lenses that shapes my thinking are my study habits. I created my own techniques to study because not just one way is always affective.
When I experimented with different study methods I rewrote my notes, broke down sections to study per day, listened to music, and I made songs this with my notes. Each method enhanced my thinking because it is easier to remember lyrics than book information.
My first two study habits are very affective and does not limit my thinking. When I experimented with rewriting notes for one class and studying sections per day for another, i received outstanding grades. The most enhancing part about these two study methods is, I can use them with every subject.

If I want to study for AP Psych quizzes and tests I have to give my full attention and repetition to study for them. My techniques to use encoding of effortful processing is definitely not to study or process my information I’m learning before I go to sleep because that’s basically having an encoding failure. I will read each section of textbook everyday and test myself using the Spacing effect so I don 't cram. I would also use index cards to write my terms and people to know and I can shuffle them. So there is no primacy effect or recency effect.…

I have started to find time to study in silence because I want to work at succeeding in my goal of getting good grades in my classes. Finding time to study in a quiet environment ensures that I’m giving my all to my classwork. Another new study habit I’ve adapted is to read over the material I’m already familiar with and put more time into learning the material I struggle to learn. My favorite suggestion and new study habit from the article was to use the “Velcro theory”. The Velcro theory is when you “hook” what you’re learning to something you already know.…

Introduction These pages contain some fairly blunt suggestions about what to do in college. Learning Human learning has two components : ‘understanding’ and ‘remembering’ Knowing a bit about how the brain works when you’re thinking will help you to see why both understand and remembering are necessary for learning. Use it or lose it We can understand something quite clearly, and some time later not be able to remember what it was we understood. If learning means both understanding and remembering, we have to practice what we understand.…

I take a lot of notes in most of my lectures so when I am studying for an exam I can see what topics the professor focused a lot on. This helps me see what main points I need to study and what minor points I can skim over. I used this skill on my last exam and it helped me get a better grade than I expected. Looking at the test questions for clues helps me understand what the question is focusing on so I can remember the exact topic and hopefully pick the correct answer. I have used this skill throughout high school and even in college.…

Another weakness I face regularly is my preparation/ study skills for courses that are more abstract. People tell me that the best way to study is by making flash cards and go over them frequently beforehand. I do find this help, but with my busy schedule of taking three or four classes, work, track, and homework outside of all that, it is hard to find the time to write out every notecard needed for an exam. A need I hope to obtain this term is different techniques when reading and taking notes out of the textbook besides writing from word to word and every definition bolded. Along with that, I hope I can obtain a habit where I study little by little on a daily basis rather than cramming everything in with a couple days before an upcoming an…
