Cognitive Flexibility

The concept I found most valuable is the Three Elements of Adaptability in the Change Management section. I find this to be valuable because in today’s Air Force we are going through many changes, and we all need to have the ability to adapt. Not only do we need to adapt to these changes, but also the changes within our organizations and specifically to the Airmen we supervise. Everyone is different in one way or the other, but as a supervisor and leader we need the ability to adapt to reach and get through to the Airmen.
My plan to improve and incorporate the three elements is by gaining a better understanding of each trait. The first element I’m going to work on is cognitive flexibility. To do this is I will think of different scenarios and situations to develop more than one plan. This will not only apply to my subordinates and interaction with them, but also to everyday decisions. For example, if I’m given a complex task to complete, I will analyze the desired outcome to devise not only one plan of action, but multiple plans in case the first or second doesn’t produce the results needed.
The second element is emotional flexibility. Of the three concepts, this is the one that I feel I have a decent grasp on. I have self-control of my emotions, but I realize that I have things I need to work on, and that there’s always room

We are in a constant state of change and it’s hard to always see the big picture and remain optimistic. Also, it’s hard for me to buy into most things when the reasons and background aren’t explained. I’ve seen it throughout my career with multiple leaders, and I don’t want to be like that. How I’m going to ensure I know what’s going on and be able to sell it to my Airmen is by asking questions. I will approach my superiors to get as much information as I can to better explain and encourage others to see the benefits and what we are working

Without money, an empire cannot manage its colonies. Following the French and Indian War, the British faced high amounts of national debt. As a means to fix its financial debacle, Britain emplaced a mercantile system upon the American Colonists, which forced them to only conduct trade with the British Empire. With the goal to increase its revenue, Britain additionally placed multiple taxes on the colonies. Therefore, to unshackle themselves from the unjust taxation and parliamentary acts of the British, the anti-loyalists initiated the American Revolution in the late 18th century.…

Out of the concepts covered during module 5 Adaptable Leader, I have found that the most valuable concept for my development is the section on Manpower. I have not yet had the opportunity to tap into this skill as much as I should and know I will need to develop it to become a better leader. The exact competencies that I need to develop may not come in to play until I reach higher rank, but fully understanding these concepts would make a difference to my unit I am currently a part of. I will become a better resource steward, having a better understanding of the four related concepts Organizational Structure, Program Allocation and Control, Requirements Determination and last but not least Performance Management.…

Something I need to stop doing is feuding with my supervisors when I don’t get my way. Even though the idea may not be the best route to go with I need to back my leaderships decision and support them to the fullest extent. Something I need to start doing is getting more involved with my subordinate’s development. In NCOA-ILE we learned of the deliberate development plan and how to guide our airmen through their careers. Creating this plan will help my subordinates in areas they require improvements and make them a valuable asset within the Air Force.…

The one concept I found to be the most important from the Module 5 lesson is the emotional flexibility concept. The reason why this concept is the most important to me is because people experience change every day in their jobs, and emotional flexibility is needed to deal with these changes. Whether it’s a supervisor telling their Airman they need to work extended hours, or Headquarters Air Force pushing a new initiative that will affect everyone, there is an emotional reaction happening. An implication of not applying emotional flexibility is that it can appear that you do not care about people or their concerns. As a leader, it is important to acknowledge these emotions so you can talk about the issue with your Airman, to let them know that you’re listening.…

The most significant learning experience in this term were the negotiation techniques names and specific strategies and the change readiness. My personal and professional life experiences have changed constantly in the last couple of years. I have always believed that change is necessary and good as long as I keep myself as stable or balance as possible inside the changes. After going throughout the experience of the change analysis process, I learned more about myself and how can I verify if I am ready for another change. Change takes time, but also a world-view.…

Identification of more helpful cognition 1a: Reframing Reframing is a procedure used to “provide the client with alternative cognitions concerning the nature of the habit-change process” (Marlatt & George, 1984). This should reduce the stress levels obtained due specific beliefs ( Vernooij-Dassen, Draskovic, McCleery, & Downs, 2011). In today 's generation it is very evident that we are learning differently and/ or even slower than generations before. Some may say it is because of lack of knowledge or easy access to new age technology and because of it we are just simply dumb. Others argue that it is not that we are dumb, but that our generation is changing, we learn differently and that it is not a lack in ourselves, but a lack in our education system. This generation is not dumb, it is simply a lack in our education system and changes in generations. The essays "The Dumbest Generation" and "Meet the Twixters" both intensely acknowledge the difference in today 's youth with a fact that new age technology and lacks in different education systems has had a…

Management 101, consisted of many stimulating and informative topics. However, learning the contrast of the X and Y management theories was exceedingly practical and most enjoyable in comparison to all the other topics discussed. This class thoroughly taught me the different perspectives and benefits of each theory and that they are undoubtedly are essential in building a strong and effective foundation in management. It will not only be a challenge, but an enjoyable task taking on the personal challenge of merging the benefits of both theories. For example, not only rewarding good performances, but also motivating employees to work on their own and empowering them to make independent decisions that they can be proud to be a part of.…

Psychology is a a complex science which studies the mind and behaviour of an individual. Psychologists have established 5 approaches to understand the human mind and behaviour: the behaviour approach, which only focuses on the different behaviours of each individual, , the cognitive approach, which concentrates on the way the mind processes knowledge, memory and language learning, after, the psychodynamic approach, which studies the impact of emotions and feelings on a person’s mind or behaviour, then on, the biological approach which analyses the genes and neurological functions in our brain which can explain our behaviour, and finally the humanistic approach which studies the person in whole, not just the mind of the person. This essay will take a particular interest in the strengths and weakness of 2 psychological approaches, the behaviour approach and the cognitive approach. Another skill that I used was active listening because good communication is key to success. Every successful group has good team leaders that engage with their team members. Furthermore, another theory that I found valuable was the goal setting theory because it directs and energizes people’s behavior. My team members and I set up goals that were challenging, but attainable. This process allowed us to create a life goal plan that was suitable for every member of the team and made them motivated.…

I, and it seems a lot of philosophers do as well, have a great deal of trouble with getting a handle on what Cognition is. René Descartes states that the mind is ultimately the bit that thinks about thinking, his oft quoted “I think therefore I am” is a case in point. I also think that to have cognition one must also have intentionality, in that something must drive or exist in the conscious that supports the thoughts, beliefs, desires, hopes. This is what is missing from the aids to thought or mental states which is extended cognition.…
