From a young age I have wanted to work with children. I find working with children and encouraging them to improve very rewarding and enjoyable. I volunteer in a variety of activities supporting children and this has further stimulated my interest in the development of young people.

I am studying Psychology Higher at Borders College and enjoying all aspects of the course. I am particularly fascinated by the development of speech and language. My work experience in a local Primary School has given me an insight into developmental impairments in language and communication and its effect on cognitive development and learning. It has also highlighted to me the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication and problems that can develop. During my experience shadowing a Speech and Language Therapist I discovered that the therapist worked closely with a Psychologist to develop intervention plans.

In my last year at school, I am working on a YASS course on Accounting and Bookkeeping through the Open University, which has given me an understanding of basic business. Studying independently at collage has been good preparation for University and has encouraged good time management skills fitting these subjects into my school timetable. When planning the team’s route I led the discussion on route options and prepared the plans to support our expedition. This gave me confidence in my abilities to develop people. I have played the violin for eight years and the piano for six years. I am in the Borders Youth Orchestra and I enjoy the residential practices and performances. Performing in a large orchestra has improved my teamwork and communication skills as we have to work together to perform well.
