I think me being her aunt made her feel comfortable around me and she acted like her usual self. Sydney is different than other five-year old’s for the reason that, she was born premature and with a disability. Since she has a disability, it has hindered her in learning like other children. She was born with a cleft palate; however, she has had speech problems even after her surgery to repair the palate. They also know numbers; they are able to start learning how to add and subtract when they are shown objects. Luckily enough, it was a school day when I was observing Sydney so she was on a routine after school where she usually gets a snack and sits down to do her homework. She did not do her homework alone, though; her mother is extremely involved and makes sure Sydney understands what she is learning. At the age of five, children should start learning to read or already can read. Each child is different and Sydney doesn’t read yet, however, this does not mean that she is behind. Child all learn at a different rate, if a parent thinks a child is getting behind it is not a horrible idea to get a tutor or practice their homework with them.
