Jean Piaget and Erik Erikson are both distinguished and renowned for their research and theory work regarding human development. However, while their subject of research of research was similar, their theories and works were quite disparate, yet even further juxtaposed, their stances on certain issues in psychology, especially the nature verses nurture debate, are actually akin.
Jean Piaget was born in 1896 in Switzerland and is most noted for his research about early cognitive development. He was often referred to as a child prodigy and became published within the field at quite an early age. The emphasis on external comes from the idea that children become aware of their own autonomy by examining and interacting with their environment. In terms of the nature verses nurture debate, Piaget would likely state that both nature and nurture are equally important in shaping individuals. This can be inferred by the assumption that all children pass through the same stages of development regardless of culture, economic status, etc. However, the rate at which a child will pass through these stages relies on their environment and the nurturing they receive. On the other hand, Erikson’s theory of development places emphasis on internal factors and the pull between two different needs. Erikson and psychoanalytical theorist believe that development begins with biological (nature) beginnings and continue to grow with proper cultivation for the outside (nurture). Erikson believed that nature determined the sequence of the stages of human development; as well, it is nature driven as all children develop through each stage regardless of the impact of nurture. However, they way each child or individual react to the pull created by the nature of the stages is where nature comes in to play. For example, while a child is struggling to find their identity or true self, their experiencing that stage of development is biological (nature), but the steps they choose to take and who they ultimately choose to be relies largely on the aspects of
