He asks the daughter if the only time her parents pay attention to her is when she is being the “responsible oldest child”. She responds by saying, “I don’t know about that”. He counters by asking her if she thinks this might be why she assumes these roles and she only responds with “possibly”. The therapist takes an additional step by posing the idea if the daughter didn’t fill that role, would she get any attention from her parents? It seems to create doubt in her assertions.
The overview of the situation is a good example of tunnel vision. The daughter is strong-willed and wants things her way. Here, the daughter makes mind reading statements believing she knows what her parents are “up to” (Bitter, 2014). Ultimately the daughter believes being less confrontational is a sign of weakness. The therapist leaves her with the task of discovering if that, in fact, is really true.
