The CBT model emphasizes the important role that both thoughts (cognition) and actions (behaviors) play a role in the maintaining an eating disorder (Turner, Marshall, Stopa, & Waller, 2015). For example, the cognitive factors could include, over evaluation of weight and shape, negative body images, core beliefs about self-worth, etc., while the behavioral factors could include, weight control behaviors, such as dietary restraints, restrictions, self harm, body checking, etc., (Turner, Marshall, Stopa, & Waller, 2015). CBT can help the individual determine what factors are maintaining the disorder and then one can set goals that are addressed throughout the phases of CBT (Gowers, 2006). CBT could help Traci with identifying where her cognitive thoughts of not wanting to get fat developed, as well as where her behaviors of restricting foods, preoccupation with clothes and grooming, derived from. Another reason this writer feels that CBT would be the most effective theory and intervention for Traci, is that CBT can also help with Traci’s depression like symptoms, as “CBT considers the importance of negative automatic thoughts, local errors or reasoning, and schematic models of self and others” (Furlong & Oei Tian, 2002). This would be beneficial for Traci in identifying the reason for Traci’s withdrawn behaviors and lack of interest in activities she previously
