This therapy has been found effective for “elementary school-age learners (6-11 years) to high school-age learners (15-18 years) with ASD.” (Wong, 2014)
Implementation Procedure: Cognitive Behavior therapy is not a single intervention but rather a broad based term for several behavioral modification based therapies including: Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Rational Behavior Therapy, Rational Living Therapy, Cognitive Therapy, and Dialectic Behavior Therapy.(NACBT, 2016). The use of CBT has been modified from the traditional model to include the use of concrete visual aids, the incorporation of individual special interests, and involvement of parents in therapy. The flexibility of CBT is beneficial when working with students with ASD.
Procedurally this therapy would look different for each individual based on goals and outcomes but it often includes :behavioral experimentation, parent-training, and school consultation when working with individuals on the spectrum. This would take place for a set number of sessions and is typically a 3 month process with an average of 16 sessions. (Wood, …show more content…
Addresses social skills to help reduce anxiety (White, 2010).
Traditionally CBT was used as a group therapy but can be adapted for individual, family, group, or even family and group.
Group therapy can help identify individuals that others struggle with issues as well. Relationships can be developed in these therapy groups as well (Sofronoff, 2007).
Cons
Lower functioning individuals affected with ASD do not have the skills required for the therapy to be effective(Ozsivadjian, 2011).
Traditional Cognitive Behavior Therapy needed to be modified for those on the ASD spectrum from the original therapy.
Minor adjustments, including making it more repetitive, use of visual and concrete examples greatly improved the usefulness of the therapy for individuals with ASD(Chalfant, 2007).
There is no standardized methods for implementing CBT for students with Autism so it is difficult to point the most effective treatment component of the CBT process. Additional research and clinical trials need to be conducted on this therapy treatment in order to best implement it.
Must be implemented by a trained professional and is not done in the traditional educational
