I wanted to help fix people. With social work I feel as though I can still help and fix people, just in a less physical sense. Taking those who are sick and making them better and returning to better function than before was my goal. In my theory, and as many social worker do, I have the opportunity to help sick individuals and make them better. With this framework the fact the reality therapy does not believe in mental illnesses and psychiatric disorders does not fit with my personal model. I do think that people can be sick and I do believe that mental illnesses may be biological. The functionality of behaviors is a newer concept to me that I learned this summer. Since conceptualizing that phrase mental health has become clearer to me. It makes sense that people’s behaviors are all done with some intention. It is first apparent in babies as they cry to get their needs met. Then toddlers are act out and are naughty as they are testing their limits and seeking attention. This does not stop and continues throughout life. Though I may seem strict and rigid with holding individuals responsible, I do believe that empowerment is one of the biggest things that can be offered to a client. This starts with a solid therapeutic relationship that is built on trust and respect of each party involved. Meeting someone where they are is really important to me. Though an individual may not have insight, as recognized in reality therapy, they understand that what they are doing is not working for them.
