Ethical Issues Of Starbucks

As a former Starbucks Barista, and an avid coffee lover – I have tasted, smelled, ground, prepared and often offered guidance to those looking for the perfect brew. I’ve heard every question, except: “Where do these beans come from?” Maybe if you asked me then, I would have touted that each bag has a specific region that they were farmed from, which is why they all have subtly different flavors – like wine. But that only answers the very basic question and does not answer how it got here, how it’s processed, if it’s ethical, and the reason behind the cost. However, ask the company and they will point you into the direction of their C.A.F.E. practices. This stands for Coffee and Farmer Equity practices, which is their basis for buying beans …show more content…
Much of the operating expenses are attributed to transportation, distribution, and logistics due to the widespread territory.” While I believe that this may be one factor for the prices being hiked up, I would also wonder how much is out of playing into the demand for the label of Starbucks, and those who are willing to pay into it. This is something I would keep in mind, but won’t be able to find a definitive source on. After it’s distributed, it comes to your favorite or most convenient Starbucks location, or anywhere that sells its product. The company’s goal is to train incredibly customer service based baristas, with knowledge and crafting of drinks that are to Starbucks standard.
It is my belief that coffee can bring people together – something as warm and inviting as a cup of coffee can spark a tradition or a smile. I encourage people to question where they can find the most ethical and delicious coffee, and urge Starbucks to continue finding new and more ethical ways of producing their coffee beans. I want to know even more about the lives of the farmers and what more can be done to make the process better for them, or if they believe they’re being treated fairly – their voices should have as great of an impact as Starbuck’s cleverly marketed
