Introduction For the purpose of this assignment, I have created a coding manual to measure control in parent/adolescent interactions. In this study, control will be defined as “the power or influence to determine the course of another individual’s actions” (Mariam Webster Dictionary). I used Clip 2 (7th Heaven) for my observation and application of my coding manual.

Question that reflects feelings: Asking questions that reflect what the child has said, how they feel, parent and child are on same page about situation
Negative touching: Any form of physical abuse
Positive touching: Hugging, kissing, holding, comforting touching
Positive body language: Facing child, open arms, nodding, eye contact
Negative body language: Arms crossed, legs crossed, not facing child

Answer: Responding to questions that parent asks
No Answer: Silence or ignoring questions that parent asks
Compliance: Doing what the parent wants, regardless of how child feels
Negative touching: Any sort of negative physical action toward parent
Positive touching: Hugging, kissing, holding, comforting touch
Positive body language: Facing parent, open arms, nodding, eye contact
Negative body language: Arms crossed, legs crossed, not facing parent
Withholding information: Purposely not telling parent information
Disclosure of information: Being honest with parent

All interactions are measured on a 1-5 scale with 1 being very low and 5 being very high
