Goa is the only state in India that regardless of religion has an active and enforced Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for all citizens even though India has different civil laws for different religious communities. The Portuguese Civil Code that remains in force even today was introduced in the 19th century in Goa and wasn't replaced after liberation. The first step for implementing the Uniform Civil Code was taken in 1954 by enacting The Special Marriage Act. Later, it was followed by 4 Acts unifying the personal laws of the Hindus.

The Roman Catholics can solemnize their weddings in cathedral after acquiring a No Argument Certification from the Municipal Domain registrar. For others, only a civil signing up of the wedding is approved as a evidence of wedding. The Catholics getting married to in the cathedral are omitted from divorce conditions under the civil law.8
For Hindus, the divorce is allowed only on the reasons of infidelity by the spouse.
