Codes Of Conduct

In many businesses and other establishments, there is a written document that sets a behavior standard to keep every party safe. This type of document is most commonly known as a code of conduct. Codes of conduct determine how people should act and behave towards others, whether it be students, co-workers, customers, etc. These codes also outline duties and responsibilities for the various amount of parties related to the establishment. The codes also outline the rules for organization that wrote the code. This document also states the penalties and disciplinary actions for failing to follow the code of conduct’s rules. Bullying, as well as harassment is an always present matter in schools, and schools are facing many accusations about this subject. So schools need a way to prevent these types of situations, which is where the code of conduct comes in. Schools will have a section specifically designed just for bullying and harassment, both online and offline, inside and outside of school. This section of the code of conduct will state the different types of bullying and harassment, as well as the cyber counter parts. That section also states the what punishments will be corresponded for different types of bullying/harassment. Digital pile on makes it difficult to to update a code of conduct properly, due to the fact that it could punish people who are defending the victim. Or maybe the code’s revision will not punish all who were targeting the victim either. This is why schools are facing lawsuits, because they can not revise the code in a way that is effective enough. Eric Veronikis, in his article Students, school districts struggle with cyberbullying across midstate and U.S., states that “Cyberbullying is a relatively new, malignant disease that teachers and administrators are battling, but don’t have a cure for in a rapidly expanding social media world.” What Veronikis meant is that cyberbullying is difficult to maintain and punish those who commit it, which connects back to why schools always need to update the codes of conduct. There has been a number of cases where schools had cyberbullying taken place, and the code of conduct had no clause for the specific way it was done through, and thus the schools could do nothing to those bullies, and the schools were then sued. So it is dire that schools constantly update their codes of conduct, and also have legal experts overview those updates and make suggestions that could accurately punish
