Nursing’s social policy statement lays out the expectations that society has for nursing and the first expectation listed is “Caring Service”. Society expects Nurses to provide care with compassion and advocate for their patients. When working with children involved in bullying it is important for a nurse to use compassion and advocate for both the victims and the bullies. The Guide to the Code of Ethics for Nurses, specifically provision 1, relates to this issue as well. Provision 1 states that “The nurse practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and unique attributes of every person.” Compassion and human dignity are important when working with children who are victims of bullying or are at risk. A CNL works from an ethical framework and therefore demonstrates and supports ethical behaviors. Altruism, human dignity, and social justice are all a part of this framework and are all threatened by bullying (white paper). It is essential when practicing altruism, that the CNL be concerned for the welfare and well-being of the victims and perpetrators of bullying.
