Coco Worm: A Short Story

Improved Essays
Every day, when Jerry turned on the light of the fish tank, the corals started to extend. The snails would come out of their shells and the fish would swim to the surface to ask for food.
Everything seemed so peaceful, but there was this day when Goby Fish suddenly said, “Hey! CoCo Worm! What happened to your feathers?”
All the tankmates looked at CoCo Worm. Normally, CoCo had two crowns full of feathers, which it uses to filter feeding, but now CoCo had only one up on its head.
“Poor CoCo, how did you lose your crown?” Clown Fish asked sadly.
CoCo, who had just woken up, was confused, “What? What are you talking about? My crowns are still up there.”
“Yes, you’re right, but one of them has lost all of its feathers,” Clown Fish said.

“CoCo is so sensitive and even if I really touched it, it would hide into its tube! I would not have been able to touch its feathers anyway!”
“Yes, but if you just touched the feathers, your poisonous tentacles would simply pull them off.”
“My poison can only kill someone; it cannot physically remove anything. CoCo’s feathers have clearly been damaged by physical force.”

“I can break that easily, kid,” Mantis Shrimp in the other tank cut in.
“But you’ve never been in the same tank, bro,” said Snapping Shrimp, Mantis Shrimp’s best buddy.
“Then what could have happened to CoCo’s feathers?” Basslet Fish asked.
“I guess . . . maybe they just fell off by themselves,” CoCo said slowly. “Oh! It must be the low total alkalinity level in the tank. Yeah, that must be the reason.”
“Oh yeah, we can even feel it now,” all the other corals said in chorus.
That afternoon, Jerry changed the water and added some bicarbonate salt to raise the alkalinity. Everything returned to normal—calm and

In the viewfind of my camera, I had at last framed the one thing that I most longed to photograph, a live, in captivity lemon shark. Tangerine looked at me with suspicious, yet curious eyes, no doubt wondering why I smelled of fish, as the water was tinted a slight red. Tangerine was a stunning, powerful creature, of 11 years old, about halfway through his lifespan. Since he was a lemon shark, he had a pale, yet vibrant shade of a soft mustard that had been mixed with a softer, sandy color, which is what it felt like to roll my hand on the left side as he circled me for the fish I had in my pocket, his flesh was squishy like slime, but also had a sandy feeling to it. Lemon sharks in captivity have a lesser brightness to the shade of yellow…

Eagerly looking forward to that, Edward leaned back in the chair, once again holding onto Harry's hand, all the while trying to avoid looking at and hearing the noises of the machine which would decide his husbands fate. The next four days passed by slower than Edward thought they could and much to the dismay of everyone, Altum Somnum proved to be mostly ineffective. No real signs of improvement were found until bloodwork taken the fifth day after the discovery of the poison showed that finally Harry's health was starting to turn around. After that, each day, the bloodwork showed more and more of a reduction of the toxins; the damage to the organs also were shown slowly be reversed.…

Louis was almost too fixated to notice that Harry had sat down on his mattress opposite Louis. The green eyed lad just sat there for a moment, every now and again his mouth opening, then shutting again as if trying to spit out the words which were obviously on the tip of his tongue. “Do you want to talk about what happened? I’ve heard that talking through things makes it better, we could try that?”…

The first day the students notice basic physical characteristics about the fish, like its size and the color of the plate it rests on. The second day the students use a book to find out about the type of fish it is, and the third day they dig deeper and observe minuscule details; like its weight, position of the mouth and texture.…
