Coco is a family movie that was released on Nov 22, 2017, that was directed by Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina (Pixar). The family film lived up to its high expectations by making $700.9 million and counting in its international box office (Tartaglione). Through themes of family, death, and passion, the film is about many things, but at its core is the story of a living boy in the underworld on the Day of the Dead who is searching for his chance to be a musician. Through life lessons, visual appeal, and an originality that appeals to audiences of all ages, Pixar created the masterpiece that is Coco. This particular setting, Dia de los Muertos, has not been depicted often in Hollywood productions despite being a well-known holiday. Some say that the film was too similar to another film released three years prior: The Book of life, however, most will agree that the comparison is unnecessary and that there is more than enough room for more than one movie that celebrates Mexican culture and that Coco remains unique. One other aspect that makes Coco stand out is the music; this is because the film’s entire soundtrack was produced with the story and culture in mind. As a result, the movie’s most notable songs like “Remember Me” and “Un Poco Loco”, which are of traditional Mexican musical genres, strengthen the film’s individuality.
