Born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, Coco Chanel lived a life of …. When Chanel’s mother died, her father sent her to the Aubazine Shelter which was run by sadistic nuns. However, this is where Coco learned to sew and six years later, at the age of 18, she became a seamstress. In her free time she enjoyed singing at clubs in Vichy and Moulins. A few years later Chanel met, a young english polo player, Arthur Edward “Boy” Capel. A while later Boy Capel helped Chanel, now a certified modiste, open a hat shop on 21 Rue Cambon and it became very successful. When Coco Chanel first started her business though, she wasn’t doing as well as she thought. Tired of Chanel’s gloating, Capel laughed and informed Chanel she wasn’t making any money and was actually in debt. In denial Coco Chanel refused to believe him, challenging him by asking why then she had money, his answer was simple, he had been guaranteeing her money at the bank. In addition he told Coco that the bank had recently called him, informing him that she was in debt. Enraged the bank called Capel instead of her to inform her about her financial problem only provoked her anger, Coco Chanel fled to their apartment only to see everything she thought was bought with her own money was really Capel’s and fled outside. Finally persuading Chanel to to come back inside Capel was able to calm her down, but not even he himself who knew Coco Chanel better than anyone could have predicted the effect this event would have on her. “When Arthur shocked Gabrielle out of her fantasy and laughed at her self-delusion, even he, who understood her well, could not have predicted the ferocity of her response. He had done her a harsh favor, had compelled her to face reality. This was a catalyst that would release her most intense creative energies”(Chaney 2).
