Animal abuse has been a part of human history for going farther back than 710 A.D.. Animal abuse has even been used for human entertainment such as bullfighting all the way to grindadraps. These activities still exists to this day. At some points in history animal abuse was considered a sport. Dog fighting was seen as far back as the 12th century. When the Romans invaded Britain, Britain’s used their dogs to help in the war. When they finally won they saw how strong their dogs were and began exploding them. Using their dogs in what is known as pit fights. These fights went on until 1835. In 1835 a law was passed prohibiting this. Through dog fighting is still at large even in America. In more recent years animal abuse has gotten worse, going from chicken and dogs fights to beating and neglecting what we call our pets. …show more content…
It does however need a few adjustments. The Animal Welfare Act doesn’t include rats, many animals used for food, and research animals. These animals don’t have very good protection against animal cruelty. While if you starve a cat or dog you can have charges pressed against you and go to jail, but if you starve a cow or rat you most likely won’t have any charges pressed against you. Right now punishment for animal cruelty is in place I do not think it is hard enough. Instead of let’s say a year in jail and a 500 dollar fine; the punishment should be much more severe. The fine for abusing an animal should be raised to five thousand dollars for every animal hurt and a maximum of 20 years in jail. If the animal is forced to indure torture for entertainment the fine and time spent in prison will be doubled. By increasing the time spent in jail and the fine that has to be paid it will make people think before they act. If a person sees that just by hurting an animal they risk losing a forth of their life, they will be least likely to hurt that
