Confederate Reckoning Throughout time, historians have debated the reasoning behind the onset of the Civil War and who was really involved in the conflict. In her novel, Confederate Reckoning: Power and Politics in the Civil War South, author Stephanie McCurry presents her audience with a unique group to factor in to the events that helped lead to the outcome in the war. Many historians focus on the technological advancements and political elections involving white men in the war, but McCurry takes a different stand point. Instead of focusing on those factors, McCurry explains how women and slaves had a large impact in the fate of the war. The Confederacy claimed to have made its secession decision in the name of the people, but McCurry causes…

Boyd Hill Nature Preserve is now one of my favorite places in St. Petersburg! This field trip was a nice break from the fast-paced urban lifestyle that I have been living since moving away from home. Our excursion began at the bird-of-prey aviary. There were several types of birds at the aviary: eastern screech owls, turkey vultures, barred owls, great horned owls, and a bald eagle, to name a few. At the aviary, I learned that barred owls are best known for a call that sounds like, "Who cooks for you……

On December 2, 1900, a sixty-year-old farmer, John Hossack, was murdered in Indianola, Iowa.…

The study of literature enables students to interpret complex themes that assist in forming an individual’s identity and their sense of community (Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards [BOSTES], 2012). The text “Riding the black cockatoo” (2009) by John Danalis explores an individual’s journey to discover his own identity, in an Australian context. This resonates between the feud between “White” Australians and the Indigenous people and is relevant to the syllabus as it is required for students to study an Australian text that provides “insight into Aboriginal experiences” (BOSTES, 2012, p.24-26). Furthermore, it introduces the intense theme of the issues regarding the Indigenous populace throughout the colonial period to the…

New Take on Tropical Songbirds’ Alternative Lifestyles A breakthrough study published on Friday in the journal Science uses life history theory to explain why tropical songbirds typically raise fewer chicks than temperate songbirds. What’s life history theory? Life history theory seeks to explain the ways in which natural selection works to determine a given organism’s anatomy and behaviors. Life history theory suggests that reproductive tendencies, or “life history strategies,” are part of a complex system of species traits, or “life history characteristics.”…

They only had a canary that would sing in the same way Minnie Wright did back when she was young. Her neighbor Mrs. Hale stated “if there’d been years and years of nothing then a bird to sing to you, it would be awful—still, after the bird was still” (992). For example, this quote illustrates that her life changed after her bird was killed because it was the most important thing in her life since she didn’t have any children to look after.
