Cocaine and Suicide: What is the Link?
1.5 million people are cocaine users, and the number of people trying it for the first time is increasing yearly. Suicide rates are increasing like just as significantly and the number of substance abusers who have attempted suicide is even higher (Platt). 5% of adults have thought about committing suicide in their life. There is all these statistics but what is the link? How does cocaine affect the mental stability of its users and how does it influence suicide?
Suicide is all over the world, and so is cocaine use. Many people are affected by one or the other and some are affected by both. Cocaine use rates are increasing yearly and many people have given up their lives to keep their addiction going. Study show that monkeys will do anything to get ahold of cocaine to satisfy their addiction; even if it means giving up their life in the process. That same study also shows that other animals are not nearly as affected by cocaine. It is common knowledge that monkeys are one of the mammals most like humans and the study proves what scientist had already figured.
Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States and it accounts for more than 34,000 deaths a year (Illgen). Mental problems have proven to be one of the most known risk factors to suicide. There are many mental disorders that have a strong link with suicide, such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and alcohol and/or drug…
