In the Coke company, there are many different types of coke such as, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Coke Zero Sugar, and Coca-Cola Classic. There are 6 reasons why a company such as Coca Cola would choose to segment their markets. To focus on the company, increase competitiveness, expand the market, create customer retention, have better, more meaningful communication, and/or increase profitability. I believe 4 of these reasons could possibly be the reason for the segmentation of the Coca Cola market. In my opinion, I think Coca Cola wanted to increase competitiveness both within the company and with Coca Cola’s competitors (such as Pepsi). Finally, I believe Coca Cola created different types of their beverages to increase their profitability. By looking at the market at a Sales Orientated perspective, by having more types of goods, theoretically, it would result in more types of consumers and ultimately, more sales which leads to more profit. In a tough market with many competitors, Coca Cola has to reach out to different types of consumers and in order to do that, Coca Cola must create different types of beverages. I believe Coca Cola Classic’s target market are those who only purchase the beverage for its flavor. This consumer is more than willing to consume all those sugars and calories as long as the flavor is as rich as it can be. Diet Coke’s target market are those who aren’t interested in consuming all those calories while sacrificing most of the Coca Cola taste but, at the same time still support the Coca Cola company. As a result, Coke Zero was very successful to the men while, Diet Coke was not appealing. However, the appearance of Coke Zero was very similar to Diet Coke which created an unsuccessful launch in North America but, it was very successful in Australia because the appearance was different. Furthermore, the Coca Cola knew it had to attract the consumers that are more health-conscious and by doing so they created more products such as Coca-Cola Blak.
