Some positions within the Coast Guard should be evaluated closely to determine if these positions are beneficial to the Coast Guard Mission. My position in the Response Division, at Sector Buffalo, I feel should be eliminated because it is of no value to the Coast Guard. This position does not have a mission, there are no leadership opportunities, and is an ineffective use of Coast Guard resources. Every member of the Coast Guard should want to, and should be expected to, contribute in some way to one of the many Coast Guard missions. One of the main reasons that this position should be eliminated is because it is a Chief Petty Officer (CPO) position that does not offer any leadership opportunities.
As with most people, I joined the military to serve my country but what I enjoy most about the military is the opportunities that I have had to lead, mentor, and develop young men and women. A CPO is expected to be a leader and a role model to the junior enlisted, however, this position does not provide that opportunity. There are

Upon reporting to Sector Buffalo I was told to take the next three years to focus on my career and getting advanced, because I had worked so hard while serving at PSU 309. While it is very flattering to hear this, and I appreciate the thought, this is not helpful to me or to the Coast Guard. Plus, all of the requirements needed for me to take the Service Wide Exam for Senior Chief has already been met (upon completion of CPOA). Due to the fact that I have over 19 years of service, I feel that I could be much more useful in another position. Since I have spent my entire Coast Guard career at Port Security Unit (PSU) 309 prior to being assigned to Sector Buffalo I had expected to use this opportunity to become more proficient in my rate and to learn about the “blue side” of the Coast Guard. Hoowever, due to the fact that I have nobody

The United States Coast Guard describes the undertaking as “...one of the greatest in the history of the U.S. Coast Guard (“Bernard C. Webber, USCG”, 1).” The United States Coast Guard is a merger of five Federal agencies that were once independent, but with overlapping responsibilities. These agencies are the Revenue Cutter Service, the Lighthouse Service, the Steamboat Inspection Service, the Bureau of Navigation, and the Lifesaving Service ("U.S. Coast Guard History", 1). Since this is the case, one might think there are many other great rescues which could top the SS Pendleton, however this rescue is one of the best in both the past and present. The events throughout the SS Pendleton rescue defy how the world generally operates, for their…

To achieve this goal I wish to be accepted into Officer Candidate School where I will later graduate with a commission as an Ensign. I believe myself to be of both strong mind and body, and I accredit this to my commitment to my school, my work, and my training. I graduated top ten percent of my class in High School and Magna Cum Laude in college and I continually try to increase the diversity of my knowledge so to become a better rounded person. I majored in Criminology and Criminal Justice and minored in Psychology, so through convention teaching methods I have gained a firm grip in the Social Sciences; however, its through my work experience that I have really grown.…

Over my 26 years of service in the Coast Guard I’ve had the opportunity to serve in many capacities: as a subordinate to service leaders, as a rescuer during search and rescue missions, as a law enforcement officer interdicting the smuggling of illegal narcotics or enforcing federal fisheries regulations and now as a lead engineer responsible for directing others in the maintenance and operation of equipment aboard a 225 feet buoy tender. As rewarding as many of these opportunities have been, few compare to the opportunity to serve as Unit Lay Reader; a voluntary position responsible for providing worship opportunities and discipleship training to fellow shipmates while at sea. After serving in this capacity at three different units I have…

I chose the job of a marine officer/ patrol officer of Keego Harbor, MI since I enjoy the water and boating, and planning to have a career in the law enforcement field. A marine officer, would patrol the bodies of water, mostly the larger ones, and, in many cases, would consist of switching from marine to patrol officer, depending on the weather and the season. The requirements of the position would be very similar to that of a patrol officer, but slightly different, and, in a way, more advanced, (i.e. marine officers should be better swimmers, more experienced than the average patrol officer due to the different tactics used), and so most people who want this position should plan farther into the future, and train with more advanced tactics.…
